That said, an attack submarine simply cannot sink a Nimitz class carrier. The ship is compartmentalized so well that you could literally blow out the entire lower decks of a Nimitz class and still not sink it
You're not very familiar with the effect of wartime damage on a ship, are you?

Try googling the term "floodable length" - you'll find it's generally on the order of 20% or less of a ship below the main deck that can be flooded before it sinks. Besides, torpedoes don't kill by flooding - they break the keel of the ship and the weight of the ship does the rest - (i.e. it breaks your shit in half)

even having such an opportunity is non-existent considering the number of escorts.
Do you know how many escorts come in a standard strike group?

The amount of conventional weaponry it would take to sink one makes attacking one impractical. It's nuke or bust.
1 or 2 Mark 48's could end it all. Besides, you don't have to sink her to knock her out of the fight.

You will not see a Nimitz class sunk by conventional weaponry in your lifetime.
Also true, I can imagine.

I say submarines. With the way anti-ship missiles are being developed, they're going to make surface vessels moot.

And what about the Gerald R. Ford class which is due for 2015 .
Yeah, most presidents have to wait until they die to have their name on a warship like this.  For no more than this reason, I would think it to be a silly thing, but alas...

Also, The current USS Essex (LHD 2) is not an Essex class ship, it's an amphibious assault ship.  The prior USS Essex (CV-9) was commissioned in 1942, and was decommissioned in the late 60's.  Of course, the reason it was mentioned was because it's in our favorite game.  But I'm sure you all knew that.

Britain, the US and Russia are the only nations with more than one carrier.

In terms of military? I think both the Brits and the US have extremely strong fleets, obviously the aircraft carriers being the sea's fortress.

For pure destructive power, Ohio class subs.

For the widest range of capabilities, Nimitz class carriers.

I agree, just look at their losses during the Falklands conflict. Their Achilles heel is that the superstructure is mostly aluminium (<--british sp) and melted during the fires after the missile hits.

Not to mention it's also the second largest navy in the world, has been since the Soviet Union collapsed.

Pure Destruction = Ohio Class, for having 24 Ballistic Missiles each armed with up to 8 different Warheads that can hit 8 different targets.  And they're incredibly hard to detect to boot.

Versatility= Nimitz Class,  All those planes could screw something over, but if your talking JUST the ship, then it's fucked.

Personal Favorite=Ticonderoga (VLS) Class.  The Aegis Radar doesn't let anything nearby, and coupled with the SM-2 is an excellent Defense.  Plus it can carry enough Firepower to screw anything over.

how about the Russian kilo class subs or the newest Virginia class boats by the USA?   I'm thinking the USS IOWA or Missouri as a capable platform(s),  both can launch devastating long range arty strikes, fire tomahawk cruise missiles, have AA capabilities, and at one time could launch and recover their own scout planes.  Yes battleships did have their own planes.  their only drawbacks are torpedoes ( ie see example:  PEARL HARBOR)
