India, China and Russia account for 40 per cent of the world’s population, a fifth of its economy and more than half of its nuclear warheads. Now they appear to be forming a partnership to challenge the US-dominated world order that has prevailed since the end of the Cold War.

IMHO, probably not. That is, for the US/China/Russia/India. The likelihood of the mainlands of any of them being invaded is slim to none.

Other nations, on the other hand, possibly. It depends on how it gets played out.

I say step on up we could use the help! It would be a plus for the US to not have to spread it's military so thin.

IF we could depend on these countries to back-up the UN in hot spots, I think it would actually be good for the US. But could anyone of these countries sustain (economically) a long-term military presence outside of their own borders? Would they need to combine resources and/or militaries?

Seriously, though, in terms of capability Australia and GB combined are a fraction of the strength of the US, couldn't even hold off one of the super powers mentioned. Your best bet would be Australia providing a distraction (being in/next to Asia) and GB using it's navy and air force to prevent the others from bringing their forces to bear. In fact, it might end up being counterproductive for the US by forcing them to defend their allies.

Reading the article it sounds like these talks are happening to stunt any agression we may have towards Iran. Hypothetically, let's say we get tough with Iran, and these three come out and so, "Oh no you didn't", that would be quite the showdown.

allies that wont get attacked (netherlands, canada, austria, britian before 9-11, etc) are just deterrents for major powers such as china. the anti-United States world will never be conventional anyway. they cannot match US conventional powers. that is why the hadjis are dressing up as women and pulling ak's. my brother, who is in the Air Force, just told me the other day that the F-15 is something like 21-0 while engaged in air to air combat overseas in the last few years. pretty rediculous. it is time to rely on our own unconventional forces. the best counter to a sniper is another sniper. fight fire with fire? (no im not suggesting taking massive innocent lives)

Agreed. Lets say we find evidence of Iran supplying nuclear material to terrorists, attempt to cut it off, and Russia, China, and India get involved and defend Iran. With some foreign countries visions of us being this fascist warlord globe trotting country, its almost like we used our last "cry wolf" dialogue with Iraq and now we could say anything and global powers will laugh at us. The way we handled the battle in Iraq, why would these big three believe us? Especially when they hold private stock in Irans dealings.

Worst case scenario I believe is these three plainly stating they will defend Iran from attacks.

All of this is hypothetically, but food for thought.
