miles & miles of area is still dessimated by the flood/hurricane !
How come the richest Country on Earth has not pulled together & rebuilt?
God forbid the same situation here in England, but I know WE would have
got things moving a lot more quickly- is it a Black thing with the USA or what?
I just dont get it - WHY

why would they re-build something they know will get destroyed again unless it has very, and i mean very strong sea defences. imo they should pack N orleans up and move to safe ground

Yeah, pretty much hit the nail on the head. No one gives a shit about that crap ass, good fer nuthin' city. It's just going to flood again. We gave everyone down there $5,000 to help them get settled somewhere else and they ended up just spending it on drugs, booze, and hookers. And now they want more money. I'm pretty sure everyone who wanted a better life, already moved from there. Live and learn I guess.

Sorry - dont buy that excuse - New Orleans has been there for Decades right?
one big flood in that time ?
Why not build better flood defences - (get in the Dutch engineers)
I still reckon its a "class/race" thing - if it happened in California "Arnie" would
hold back the sea on his own, and the Hollywood stars would dip into their
very deep (selfish) bank accounts !

From what I understand most of the ppl didn´t get shit from insurance ...and 5000 should be enough for covering their rebuild or restart of their life?

I must say...i´m very glad i dont live in USA.....capitalizm at it´s worst..... I bet everyone feels the same about the snow in New York....why spend alot of money on shuffeling snow for decades, with the ecosystem out of balance it will only be more and more snow.....just move the damn place right....oh...shit ...my bad....rich ppl live there...sorry....

Get your act together Mr. Bush....your own ppl needs you more then the Iraqis ever have or will...

Well it's interesting that the local government in New Orleans opted to spend money to promote and hold Mardi Gras over the last two years rather than spend that money on the city!

There are a lot of people here in San Antonio that came after Katrina and they have pretty much decided to stay (seems our schools are a lot better than theirs), so that adds to some of the problem, people left and decided to not go back.

Now you seem to be focused on New Orleans, but Katrina ravaged other areas just as bad.  I have a co-worker here who's family is still living in trailers in South Mississippi because the insurance companies got out of paying for damages (they claim it was flood damage, not storm surge!!!).  And there were other storms that hit the Gulf region last year.  There's a lot of re-building to do everywhere.  Why should New Orleans be special?

As for New Orleans (IMO)... the city is sitting on silt that has poured out of the Mississppi river.  So basically it's sitting on a big pile of mud and crap.  It's below sea levl, so it's not a safe place as it is.  I vote we not waste any more FEDERAL tax dollars on a city that is obviously going to get washed away again.

ive been to Mississippi twice to help with clean up and going back in March.  its a mess.  plain and simple.  but its making a comeback.  i think i have to agree with whoever said why waste time on parts of new orleans that will just get nailed again and again.

the feds have been giving new orleans money for years to figure out the levy issues if a cat 4 or higher hurricane hit and nothing was ever done.  new orleans is proof that a welfare state will fail if the status quo is altered.  socialism doesn't work kids.

The city is a lost cause. The whole area its built on, has over the years sunk, as its built on silt. With sea levels rising, I wouldn't spend too much on it.

Dude STFU you don't even know what I'm talking about obviously!  There are other (more stable) areas in our country that could also use the money.  Domestic spending is separate from Foreign spending dumbass!

Just thought I'd make a few points:
1.  Rebuilding a city the size of New Orleans takes time.
2.  Supposedly there are plans to redesign some of the areas destroyed by the hurricane to try to improve over what was already there.
3.  (I think this task has finally been completed but)  Before any work could start in some areas of the city, the levees had to be rebuilt and then the water had to be drained.  That would account for at least some delay in the rebuilding process of some areas.

I used to live in New Orleans, and someone in my office relocated from New Orleans.  So here it goes:

1) Prior to Katrina, there was a large population of poor.  Katrina relocated them to other cities.  This is an opportunity for them to do something beyond what New Orleans has to offer.
2) The economy of New Orleans was based mostly on tourism.  Therefore no tourists = little economy.  So spending money on Mardi Gras = more economy.
3) The city is worse than before.  Crime, etc.  If you had an opportunity to leave, wouldn't you?  Let someone else rebuild, especially because most of the economy is no longer there!
4) With the local economy in shambles, there is a rise in crime.  So while there is a demand for construction/rebuilding jobs...who wants to work there?

National money is pouring into the region.  The city has always had a reputation for being corrupt...and it continues with the aid received.

It's a matter of time, but even so, the city will never get back to pre-Katrina.

And lastly, blah blah blah why isn't it fixed yet?  How long does it take to rebuild in other countries - this is massive devastation and it's been like one or two years?  This is like a 10 year problem....

I'm not sure how socialism/welfare state contributed to the destruction of the levy which apparently could not even handle Cat 1 hurricane storm surge. Evidence to that was the fact that the levy(s) failed while the storm surge was still rising.

And when you say the fed giving money you have to specify where it was going -- this fact alone proves the lack of foresight since it was the ARMY core of engineers that were overseeing the project. Their budget was cut back due to, you guess it, the war.

Regardless it is a very sad state of affairs.

Totally inaccurate. I have been to New O myself and seen the rebuilding. My state (FL) has sent thousands of utility worker to help get the infrastructure back. It's true that we should be reinvesting more into our own economy rather than other nations abroad in my opinion also, but with New Orleans there is literally hundreds of millions of dollars that has been distributed with more waiting to. New Orleans is making a comeback due to honest caring citizens all over the US. Sadly I must wonder also why they are rebuilding the levies to the same standards.

Don't believe everything you see on TV. Look at the before and after pictures to see the difference. There is still a very long way to go but they have come a long way also.

Alot of people moved out for good.
They are rebuilding the flood dfenses. But I still wouldn't move there. You have a city that is below sea leval that is right next to the sea...... that's just asking for trouble.

Most of the people left, a bunch died, and the ones that left probably aren't going back.

Also, you fail to grasp the scale of American cities. It's not like Britain, where everything's close together and within walking distance; they're HUGE. They have plenty of space, cars aplenty, and so spread out.
Seriously, I tried walking somewhere in Kansas City once, and ended up walking for an hour before I found anywhere to eat. I was still in the same city. Back here, that same hour would have taken me to the next freaking town.

The government has poured a lot of money into rebuilding New Orleans, primarily for political reasons and not for anything long-lasting.  Most rational people know that it is not practical to rebuild a large city in that location.  So ... being honest ... New Orleans will receive token political gestures to rebuild, but it is a downsizing city with many regions in need of abandonment.

Overall, the low ground around New Orleans' French Quarter/Garden District (the high ground) is a horrible place to build a city, and insurance rates will be prohibitively high for any who attempt to settle there.  Psychologically, new business and people will shun New Orleans ... slowly, the bulk of the existing population will trickle away.

The same thing happened with Galveston Texas following the hurricanes in the early 1900's.
