In Transparency International's 2006 corruption index, Finland ranks as the least corrupt and Haiti ranks as the most corrupt nation. Many Asian countries, unsurprisingly, are ranked as very corrupt. What is shocking, however, is the number of corrupt nations found right here in the Western Hemisphere. In addition to Haiti, we've got countries such as Peru, Argentina, and Bolivia scoring horribly on the corruption index. Corruption is a serious issue that affects politics, public contracting, international conventions, the private sector, aid, access to information, education, and even health.

Western society is generally perceived as more progressive and "civilized" than its Eastern counterparts. It is truly disappointing that, in the 21st century, there are still so many countries in this hemisphere that are not living up to the standard.

What are your general feelings on corruption and how do you think this problem can be remedied?

Corruption is bad. If I had bill Gates kind of money I'd hire hitmen to kill all corrupt people.

I despise corruption. This is what I would do if I had the power to do so.

1) Do a study on the least corrupt countries & try to form a base model that our company's can implement into a nationwide program, perhaps something like CWC -Corporations without Corruption.
2) Increase the penalty's for corruption in the work place to absurd levels that no one would dare think of breaking.
3) Anyone reaching a level of upper management having mandatory psychological tests to determine if they have tendency's towards corruption.
4) Good accounting practices.

The downside of little corruption is you can't bribe cops when you get in shit, the power trip is worth more than money

Again, US pointing the finger....America probably made that list and it wouldnt surprise me it if really topped that list(in terms of the "amount" of corruption)..sorry Haiti aint that big...

How do you remedy corruption in America?
It exists...and is obvious to an outsider...maybe is just "the way life goes" to you..
America makes crime so fashionably mainstream that it is largely accepted and tolerated...

Sorry to burst ur bubble..

Obviously you didn't read the article and used this as a means to attack the US.  The list ranked almost all the contries from best to worst.  USA was tied at #20, with your Australia at #9.

Also, it's talking about corruption of public officials, not crime.  There is a difference.

You're not "bursting" anyone's bubble.  Of course there is corruption in the US--that's why we have 7.3 and not a 10.  Duh.  Are you now going to inform us the world is round, Captain Obvious?

I suggest you try reading for a change.  And if you did read it, I suggest some help for your comprehension skills.

We vote the shit heads out. You go out of your way to type a bunch of accusations without really saying much. The fucking irony is nauseating. You start off by criticizing finger pointing yet you proceed to do just that. You have no idea what corruption is. A corrupt government is not successful, especially in a system of elected leaders. America is a state that is militarily, economically, and technologically dominant on the world stage. All within only 200 years of existence. We are doing something right. If you think my bubble is busted I have no problem with it.

What causes corruption is the leader of the country forcing his or her ideas on the people.

Corruption, at least the possibility of it, exists whenever any extra power (be it legally, politically, economically...) is given to a human being. That's the problem in China, there are so many people who need services, you need to go beyond the normal channels and bribe/invite to dinner officials in order to get something because these officials have the power to decide if you get what you want. Corruption would therefore be kerbed if humans had no influence, and everything was done by computers/machines which follow set laws.

Perhaps a truly communist country would not have corruption.

It's interesting that this is "corruption index" is actualy an index of the "perceived corruption" in each country, making it a subjective list and probably not worth the (virtual) paper it's written on.

It's also interesting that the list is written the way it is - I'd have expected a country that is perceived to be highly corrupt to be high on the list.  With an index, the country or object that's most like the title should be at the top.  If you had an index of the highest earning professions, you'd not expect professional football player to be near the bottom, would you?

Final interesting thing I noticed is that Belarus - a European country, albeit part of the former USSR - is right down at the bottom, below even Zimbabwe.

It is known that we Finnish are the least corrupted. You can't fart towards a politician without him being sued for corruption here.

Hanging Saddam was a mistake because it was worse for Iraq, not because Saddam didn't deserve it.  And by hanging them I don't say it literally.

I'm sure you could, but the price would have to be right and you'd need very large breasts.
