With that logic why not ban the big illuminated advertisements in Times Square? Are there not bigger problems that Senator Carl Krueger could be addressing? What's with the US & the UK for that matter trying to smother us? Are we slowly becoming nanny states? Discuss.Bit-Tech wrote:
Senator Carl Krueger wants to ban iPods on the streets of New York because he believes that they're the cause of an increasing number of fatal accidents in the city.
The Senator is planning to introduce a law in New York that would prohibit the use of handheld devices, including iPods, BlackBerrys, portable video game consoles and mobile phones, in order to reduce the number of fatalities.
"This electronic gadgetry is reaching the point where it's becoming not only endemic but it's creating an atmosphere where we have a major public safety crisis at hand," claimed Krueger.
If Krueger's proposed bill is passed, every person carrying an active iPod or other handheld device on the city's streets would be a criminal. Offenders would be given a $100 USD (~£50) fine and a criminal court summons.
"You can't be fully aware of your surroundings if you're fiddling with a BlackBerry, dialing a phone number, playing Super Mario Brothers on a Game Boy, or listening to music on an iPod," said Krueger.
Not only will this cause an uproar among music fans, it will also affect the BlackBerry addicts on Wall Street who use their various handheld devices for business purposes. Any uproar is unlikely to affect Kruger's stance though.

New York should ban Red Sox fans from coming to The Stadium. Then think about banning other stuff.
Malloy must go
Gameboy? What is this the nineties?
What do mean slowly, I think we already are... People are becoming WAY too over-protective now-a-days. (And too liberal.)
And that would be awesome if we could get rid of advertisements/billboards!

Lol, idiot.
Like half of everyone in New York these days has a Blackberry, same goes for an iPod.

they should ban water, because people drown in it !!11!1!11
Whatever, Welcome to the United Police States of America...bitch.
lol nice video
They should ban retarded Senators...
Its about time, and they should probably ban cars too, they kill 265,000 each year worldwide!!
That's just a retarded idea, it's about like the Republic of California trying to ban the use of incandescent light bulbs in favor of those compact halogen ones, yeah it might be nice, but I've got a real problem with the government telling me what kind of a light bulb I can use. Same goes for if I want to listen to music or not, hell if I was in New York I'd want to be distracted so I didn't realize I'm in New York, no offense, but I'm really not a fan of big cities.

While I think his approach is going overboard, I do kind of see his point. On my campus, I'm sick of having dumb girls (mostly from the East Coast) with their trendy iPods walk blindly across the street, forcing me to swerve or hit the brakes. The worst part is that they carry on with their stupid sheep lives and don't even realize that they almost got put out of their misery.
Just hit them a little bit next timeDonald O' Brien wrote:

His intentions are noble but extreme. It's a distraction, true, but we shouldn't police people to do this. We don't fine people for smoking in their own homes, nor do we fine people for eating Big Macs.
What a git! Hes keeping the stupid gene alive!
Its a conspiracy by extremist christians! They are trying to disprove the theory of evolution by actively stopping it from working!

No one here has mentioned the single largest cause of death for all of humanity....Life. It, unlike smoking, drinking, or walking blindly into the street has been proven to have a 100 percent mortality rate. Save our children from this horrible disease, and ban life! Seriously though, you're gonna die sometime, and if you're dumb enough to have your iCrap playing music at a level where you can't hear oncoming traffic AND you don't look for oncoming traffic, you have it coming.
I think the law should just be that the moron pedestrian who wanders into oncoming traffic should be the person at fault in the event of an accident. Oh wait, that is the law.

Both parties are responsible for the slowly approaching nanny state. As long as they have your attention and money, you will be slaves to them.
It would take more police (Time & Money) to patrol every intersection in NYC, than to have a selected few investigate the murder. Personally, I think it's really just a waste, more people would wear their iPods/cell phones upon crossing now that it's illegal. It's obviously so much more fun to do illegal things, it's encouraging it because it's a limitation.
As whats stated earlier, let them walk across blindly.
Gotta' love being a conservative New Yorker...

Having walked into a lamp-post whilst writing an sms on my mobile, I can understand why he might think blueberries/mobiles/pdas are a danger, but iPods!?!? That's just nuts!!!! We've had walkmen for what, 20years, and I haven't noticed any spate of people getting killed whilst listening to any kind of portable music devices...
Except that liberalism opposes protective governments.....................{M5}Sniper3 wrote:
