For those of you unaware, Red Orchestra is a realism based mod for unreal tournament 2004. The current version is Red Orchestra 3.3 and is a really fun and intense game to play especially in clan matches. As it is a realism based mod, every shot counts. Bolt action rifles are one shot kills when you hit anywhere on the body or face, and smg fire will kill you pretty quick aswell.

Anyways, point is the programming team that made it recently won an award, and the prize was full access to the UT2004 engine and access to all sorts of technical goodies in order to make the game better.
L8r this month they will release a retail version of Red Orchestra that is a stand alone game and doesn't require UT2004 to work. The game will be available only over STEAM, and will probably be around the $30 (£20) sort of price range. This is the link to the official site take a look yourself.

Another great thing about Red Orchestra is the community. Most players that play RO are mature people that aren't idiots (like some noobs in bf2), and are generally nice guys to play with.

I'm sure the release of the retail version will fetch many new players to the game and i hope some members of the BF2 community will give it a try aswell. One thing i must say is that if anyone reading this post decides to give it a go, dont give up on the game if you suck at first it does take time to get used to and after a few weeks you will find yourself really enjoying it.

I really hope some of you will take a good look at this game first before dismissing it as it really is a quality game and the retail version will make it even better.

If you have any questions about the game sign up to the forums on the webpage i gave you above, and ask away, im sure most people on there will be happy to help.

Thanks

i played the first several betas of RO, back in ut2k3 days.

way too slow for me.  the game ended up being one of two things - lying prone in a dark corner squinting at blurry pixels in the distance which may or may not be an enemy and may or may not die when you shoot at it, or running with a ppsh through hallways and spraying and praying for all you're worth.

some people who want realism might like it, i prefer my games to be more technically challenging and less torturously frustrating than RO.

the newer versions of RO aren't like that. I mean obviously its slower paced than something like BF2, cos its realsim based and you cant just run in shooting do a few a bunny hops and waste your opponent. But thats what good about RO, it takes real skill and you need to learn what your doing before you can become even average at the game let alone to become good at it.

The new retail version of the game looks spectacular and uses the Unreal 2.5 engine. The game includes many new features which can be all be found on the website i mentioned in the first post. Dont judge the game on UT2004, because its nothing like it. I myself bought UT2004 just to play Red Orchestra, thats how good a game it is.

everything said here is just personal opinion and preference, of course.

i love ut2k4. i love the extreme amount of technical skill involved, the reflexes it requires are far beyond realism games. that's where the real skill is.

in games without a crosshair, like RO, the 'skill' mostly just involves being in the right spot in the right time. it encourages defense over offense, since you need to be iron sighted to hit anything. in close quarters situations you are pretty much limited to spraying - what else can you call it if you don't have crosshairs to aim with?

i don't know how the addition of vehicles has affected RO's gameplay, so that is an unknown factor. but i can assume that since it's 'realism' based, a normal foot soldier should have little chance of defeating a tank.

i don't like realism. i want my games blazing fast, and require you to keep track of ten opponents flying through the air in a three dimensional whirling madness of death.

lol, i like the whirling madness of death part. the tanks and stuff are cool, but they aren't on many maps and the tank maps aren't great anyway, RO is all about the infrantry imo. As for UT2004 needing supreme reflexes you are 100% right, but RO is about reflexes aswell. If you got two smg's run round a corner at each other, whoever has superior reflexes usually wins. Same for the bolt action rifles, when two riflemen are lining each other up whoever is quickest will get the kill.
Another thing i never said was that RO is all about teamplay, unlike most online FPS that you can generally just run around on your own and still be pretty effective, in RO if you do that you get your ass kicked everytime.

Every game is different and all players are different aswell, but RO is definetely a game that any serious FPS gamer will enjoy.

Well, they could start by spicing up the homepage.

No seriously, i downloaded it once for UT2k4 but it didn't work, probably because i was using a ripped version of the original game. But your description of the game makes it sound really interesting. The "1 shot 1 kill" is something that I love. It's really satisfying. I might try it. I probably will.

i really liked vietcong and CoD better than RO, those games play a little faster but are essentially the same concept. CoD is a little more on the deathmatch side of things.

there are no official release dates as yet, but it should be out by the end of january and if not it will be out early february. Because the proggramers have no publisher for the game, they can take as long as they need to fix the bugs and get the game working perfectly without being rushed, like dice obviously were with EA for example.

As for CoD being more like a death match your exactly right, but thats why RO is better than CoD, it is far more tactical and challenging and whenever you get a kill, its not just like "whoa one more frag for me, i'm 1337" , its actually really satisfying when you get a kill because you know that you had to outthink the enemy.
