You don't need to.  I did'nt need too.  But, you want to know what I think i'm going to get flamed for this but... BF2 and BF2142 runs better on Vista than it ever did on XP.

You should always uninstall video drivers before installing new ones.

You should in all the years i've been working with computers i've never done it and not had a single problem.  Don't know but I still don't think you need to.

Im getting rather confused with all the different versions. Could someone please explain...

Retail vs OEM?

Upgrade Editions vs Normal?

How many times can each be installed?

How many liscences does each come with?

Which ones have both 32 bit and 64 bit versions?

Why some versions are "N"

So confused what to buy here...

PS Im looking at this list http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products … l_uid=1249

OEM is answered in the FAQ.

And as far as the upgrades go get that if you already have XP.  But you can't install it on another computer.  You get 1 lisceences per purchase.  32bit or 64bit is your choice.  But in all reality 64bit is not practical right now in time.  I would get home premium upgrade.

The nVidia drivers link is only for series 8! Please add a link for all series or at least make it clear for which version those drivers are.

No those are the correct ones.  I personally know cause I have a 7600GT and I downloaded the 32-bit drivers.

Which link are you using?  Cause I know for a fact the 32bit works.  Its the exact link I used I just copied and pasted.

Edit: Your right this is really weird.  I swear I used those drivers on my 7600GT...  I looked into it.

Edit 2: I just downloaded the 32-bit version and it worked using that link.

1) OEM is cheaper but has no manuals, cool boxes, or tech support. I heard that the OS also does hardware checks on OEM licenses, and if something like more than 7 parts are changed it locks you out. Don't quote me on that though.

2) Upgrade is cheaper but requires you have XP. I don't know if you need it installed or not, as I've heard of people installing upgrade editions and then calling MS to clear out the activation stuff. I WOULD LIKE THIS CONFIRMED

3) Not sure, I think one?

4) Home Premium and Business come with 32-bit on the disc, but filling out a quick form on Microsoft's site will get you a 64-bit disc for free *unless you pay for express shipping*. Ultimate comes with both 32-bit and 64-bit.

4) It's because the European Commission of the EU filed a lawsuit against Microsoft for violating anti-trust laws. Something to do with Windows Media Player. These "N" editions ship without Media Player and I think without Media Center, to comply with the settlement of the lawsuit.

I've got a question:

With the Upgrade edition, do I need to have XP installed? I've got a computer with XP which I'm using right now. It's XP Home Retail. If I get a new computer, with the Upgrade Retail edition (I like my tech support tyvm), do I need to install XP on the new computer first? If so, won't it conflict with my current installation on the other computer due to Microsoft's silly licensing regulations?

edit: Also, will 32-bit drivers work with 64-bit Vista? I'm leaning on it being No, but I'm just wondering.

No you do not need XP BUT, if you don't have XP with SP2 installed it will rename the old windows folder and move your installed programs in side that fold.  it will not carry over any installed programs but it will not delete them.  And thats a negitive on the drivers question too.  Although I remember beta 1,2 and RC1(Only ones I tested.) Allowed you too on 64-bit versions.

Same here, I don't have an actual disk for XP, it came with the PC I bought and then it asked to create aDell OS Recovery CD. I am thinking of getting the OEM http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showprodu … =SW-040-MS

The answer is yes for both of you and in fact I bet you if call Dell up and ask them about it they may even cut you a deal on the OS. Just a thought.    But, you will have to install the Dell disk before installing the Vista if you ever needed to reformat.

Edit: I'll update the Q&A today with some of your guys questions.

I've learned a special loophole for installing Vista through an Upgrade CD without needing XP or 2000 installed. I wouldn't do it without actually having a legit XP key, this is mainly just to save time when installing on a brand new system.

1.Boot from the Windows Vista Upgrade DVD and start the setup program.

2.When prompted to enter your product key, DO NOT enter it. Click "Next" and proceed with setup. This will install Windows Vista as a 30-day trial.

3.When prompted, select the edition of Vista which you have purchased and continue with setup.

4.Once setup has been completed and you have been brought to the desktop for the first time, run the install program from within Windows Vista.

5.This time, type in your product key when prompted.

6.When asked whether to perform an Upgrade or Custom (advanced) install, choose Custom (advanced) to perform a clean install of Vista. Yes, this means that you will have to install Vista for a second time.

7.Once setup has completed for the second time, you should be able to activate Windows Vista normally. You can also delete the Windows.old directory which contains information from the first Vista install.
From here: http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=5932

Like I said, I'd only do this if I had a legit XP key, as Microsoft might fix this problem at some point in time. It's just a timesaver more than anything. XP takes longer to install than Vista does, not to mention you'll have a cleaner hard drive (supposedly) if you do a clean install through this method. Happy Vista-ing!

edit: I've got an upgrade copy of Vista sitting at home All I need is the computer to run it =p *typing from my father's laptop at his apartment*. The box is as cool as I thought it would be, so worth the extra $40 or whatever over the OEM =p

Also Brizzer, I think it would be grandly appreciated by everyone if you also included driver statuses for things like Creative sound cards (X-fi mainly), network cards (Not every single one, but just a general idea), and motherboards (eVGA doesnt seem to have anything for their new mobos, the 680i or something, which they tout as the ultimate for Vista LOL gg).

Well for the most part network cards are covered by windows if its an addon card and most people have a NIC card built into their mobos.  How ever Creative has release some beta vista drivers.  I've checked into already just never posted it.  I'll do it after the super bowl tonight.

Yeah, I'm rooting for your Colts =p hoping next year the Redskins have a miracle. Just a quick question: What about PCI wireless cards? Specifically, a Linksys 802.11b/g PCI card? Should it be handled by Vista fine? And also, should Vista have built-in drivers for the 680i chipset? I read somewhere it does.
