Well, you're insane. You clearly aren't studying maths, or you'd realise that since you can't get a mortgage with 44 grand of regular loan you will be pouring the next 10 years down the drain in rent as well as interest.Vilham wrote:

The students loan is MAX 3 grand a year, the rest has to be done on normal loans with normal interest, thats 8 grand a year of normal loans. By the end of uni thats 32 grand with 4 years interest on 8 grand, 3 years on 8 grand, 2 years on 8 grand, 1 year on 8 grand. And seeing as i cant pay back 44 grand straight off there will be more interest to come.
I dont know what your course was like but i work. I dont intend to spend my time off in the evenings and at weekends when im not doing coursework or revising for exams working in a job.
And anyway, the loan for the top-up fees is also interest free (inflation capped), so that's actually £6k interest free.
I was happy to do 50-80 hours work in a week of lectures/coursework/work, because at least now I've finished with less than £2k regular debt which I've almost paid back, six months after graduating. When I first started uni I worked the 5pm-10pm shift doing data entry 5 days a week, until I found something better paid with more humane hours (e.g. my study days). I made the study up in the evening. Plus the other 26 weeks of non-term time were handy for cash boosts.
Although I don't agree with lowing on much, I really do think you are going to be in for a big reality check in the next few years. University is a dos in the UK, particularly if you borrow massively in order to live beyond your means rather than trying to break even and still have a decent life. I went clubbing at least 2 or 3 times a month through most of my degree, and smoked more weed than most of my year put together, but I also worked harder than most of them put together. There were some people who worked as hard or harder than me, and they also got sweet jobs and didn't end up with huge debts. The people with 10 credit cards usually ended up dropping out.

No its not. THE MAXIMUM LOAN IS 3 GRAND. END OF! You didnt even pay top up fees, so tbh you dont know wtf you are talking about. Wow your student life was pointless if you only went out 2 or 3 times a MONTH. I dont have a single credit card. No one i know has dropped out due to debt. You term being 26 weeks is also further proof that what ever course YOU did or uni YOU went to was a joke. I have 40 weeks of term, that still leaves large amounts of holiday which i work my ass off in, to pay for multiple other things that i have to support, like my car insurance and general car upkeep. Basically I think you trying to compare your uni days to mine is pretty pointless, as nothing you are trying to compare is similar.UON wrote:

As you pointed out earlier, this thread is so far gone....
In an attempt to get back to the topic...
No one reacted much to my earlier point "which is stronger? Islamophobia or Western-phobia in the Middle East?"
I would think that Islamophobia didn't really have a start until 9/11. Up until that point I was thinking...wow the Middle East is screwy...not my problem. Or wow, they are burning an effigy of the president in Iran...haha loonies.
So is this a chicken & egg scenario? Because I contend that most of the American public could give a crap about the Middle East until 9/11...now the entire world is obsessed with it.
Hatred for the West has been there for a very long time. So now we even the hate/phobia scale? Well...yeah...eventually it was going to happen right? Especially if provoked?
But how is this different from the Middle East hating us?
It's okay for the Middle East to hate us, but not the other way around? How many years have we failed to improve relations in that region? I always felt it was like the US was knocking on that door over and over again...
Now, with regard to Pug's question, which is stronger, Islamophobia or Wester-phobia, I think it should be noted that phobias are considered illnesses of the mind, if I am not mistaken. As such, I don't think they should play a role in determining wether a particular group of people poses a threat to anyone.
That's like asking a convicted child molestor to work in a kindergarden. Bad things are going to happen.
Nevertheless, given modern history ( 20th century ), the middle eastern countries certainly have suffered more western-based imperialism than vice versa. The western superpowers have a long history of interfering with the internal affairs of countries such as Iran, Iraq, Saudi-Arabia, Afghanistan, etc..
The reasons were mostly economic in the beginning ( because of the fact that most ME nations have oil ) but have turned more strategic lately.
And the continued support for Israel is just another issue that tends to make middle eastern arabs angry when they think about western nations.
Given our track record, I think it is safe to say that they have suffered a lot more under western imperialism ( be it culturally, economically, or colonially ) than we have ever had to endure from them.
Of course, this is no justification for committing terrorist acts, but I can see where this hatred might stem from.
The other aspect to consider is Islam. There is a considerable dicussion going on, wether Islam is a religion of peace or not. Opinions vary. Personally, I believe that any religion has the potential to be misused or misinterpreted to make its followers believe that they should kill non-believers in its name.
That was the case with christianity also, back in the middle ages. Things have changed in the meantime, and today, we tend to not kill in the name of christianity any more ( some exceptions, though ).
Islam, however, is around 600 years younger than christianity, with mohamad believed to be born in the 7th century AD, and the Qu'ran conceived at about the same time ( exact dates vary, but are all in the 7th century ).
Thus, as far as a modern interpretation of their religion goes, muslims still have a lot of catching up to do.
"Modern" Islam is not what "modern" Christianity is. Some will even argue that Islam is stuck in the middle ages, showing no sign of progress or evolution.
I don't think that is the case though. The majority of muslims worldwide is living in peace and those who commit terrorist acts in the name of Islam are tiny minority.
The more we paint them all with one brush ( I hope that's the correct metaphor ), the more we will alienate those muslims who are peaceful, and have no intention to do us harm.
As usual, generalizations do not help solve anything, but are bound to make the situation worse.
Am I afraid of muslims ? Hell no. As it stands, I am more likely to have my face smashed in by a white guy in a bar fight, than getting attacked by a german muslim for religious reasons.
Conclusion: Islamophobia is just that, an illness of the mind. Don't fall for it.

De-escalation is the order of the day here. And that goes for everybody.
forgive me for not reading back the 15 or so pages in this thread but a phobia is a fear of something, anti-semites call for the death of all jews, not really equivalent
i would gladly agree with the Muslims that theirs is a religion of peace when the mullahs and imams come out and say those extremists strapping bombs to their kids are bad and to knock it off...as of yet, hasn't happened. terrorism isn't a battle strategy, its a political tool...one those of us in western civilization will never understand or agree with

I agree. However as a former employee of an university, and a current employee of a company with very close ties to both the major universitys in my local area, I feel obliged to clear up a few misleading statements which might put people off attending university in the UK:B.Schuss wrote:

I worked as tech support/development for my uni as my 52 week placement during the period when top-up fees were introduced, I was actually expected to know about the new system as part of my job, so as to be able to direct people to the correct place/website when they turned up at the tech support desk with stupid question about why they haven't got any cash yet (trust me, they did). You now get around a £3200 maintence loan and a £3000 fee loan from the SLC, which is capped to inflation. I stopped working as tech support when I graduated 6 months ago, so I really doubt much has changed. And the standard teaching calendar at almost every uni in the UK is 26-28 weeks, once you deduct the holidays from the 40 week academic year. There may be a few more exam weeks depending on course. If you have coursework to do during the holidays, then you haven't managed your time well, the 35-38 hour week is designed to include the coursework. The teaching weeks are almost always spread over 2 semesters. You don't need to borrow privately on the scale Vilham indicated, with a little effort you can finish with little more than the standard student debt and also have a good time. Anyway, don't be put off, it's hard work if you do it right, but it's worth it. Don't think you need to keep up just because some people borrow far beyond their means. There are a few on every course, and in my personal experience they don't last it out to the very end.
Don't be put off by anything anyone says.
