I have a p4 3.2e HT(not extreme)478 pin.
I want to get a new cpu so I can use PCI-e but I'm not sure if I should stay with Intel or try out AMD. I'm just wondering what other people have here who play bf2 since that's what I do most with my computer.

I have a P4 2.8 right now, but everything I have read indicates that AMD CPUs perform better in gaming than Intel.  Right now the best thing out there is the FX57; it costs ~$1000.
EDIT:  I have heard, though, that Intel CPUs OC better than AMD.

Another thing you will have to consider is a new motherboard.  To go PCI-E, you will have to upgrade your motherboard and maybe other pieces of hardware in your system.  If you go with AMD, you might have to buy different ram to work with the new mobo.

My specs with details on mostly high with high sound and EAX

processor:     Athlon 64 3500+
mobo:           Abit AV8 3rd Eye
ram:             2GB Crucial PC3200
video:           Built by ATI Radeon X800XT AIW
sound:          Sound Blaster Audigy 2
HD's:            2- 200GB WD SATA  (not raid ) : 1-160GB WD EIDE

I've got an AMD 64 3500+  I am really happy with it's performance, even though I am using the 32bit Windows it is still pretty snappy.

I do want to build a new machine and make some changes though.  A dual core 4400+ would be kick ass.  And maybe a new SLI set up, see if I can get it right this time.

I'd say go for a 939 pin AMD Athlon 64 processor with a nForce 4 SLI motherboard (MSI make a nice board with a 24-bit on board 7.1 channel creative soundblaster card).  Then spend as much as you can afford on a decent PCI-E Graphics card (at least 256MB on board memory either NVIDIA 6800/7800 or ATi X800) and 2 x 1GB sticks of Corsair TwinX 3200 RAM.  That should handle pretty much anything you can throw at it for the next 6 months at least.

How do you guys get the ATI Radeon 9200 to work for this game. I had a 9200 chipset (don't remember the exact brand) and it would crash whenever there was a lot of action or a big explosion near me. I switched to a 9600 or something and it works fine. (I know that this isn't the best card but I built the computer myself with the goal in mind being of making it cheap but good enough to work.)

P4 3.0 HT
1GB (single stick) PC3200 DDRRAM

If I got another 1GB of RAM what would this do for my game?
The motherboard is set up to run dual channel ram but as I stated I am only running one stick now.

why are people voting for intel?

The question was "What CPU do you have in your system?"  not "What should I get?"

Unfortunately, some people haven't experienced the benefits of shorter, fatter pipelines offered by AMD.  The P4 is like a dragster, it's great in a straight line, but in real world conditions it's no different to the Athlon.  The AMD offers more performance to cost ratio and is generally preferred as a result.

My system entails:
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (754 pin)
MSI nForce 3 250Gb Mobo
1GB Kingston RAM
XFX Geforce 6800 Ultra

This seems to run BF2 alright, benchmarks pretty well but lacks the dual channel (128 bit) memory bus that a 939 pin processor offers.  (That speeds it up by 3-4 times when you use 2 sticks of RAM by the way)

Unfortunately, although my system is only 18 months old now, most of it's obsolete.  I recently built a system for a friend of mine using the spec I listed in my previous post, only using a 4800+ X2 (dual core) processor, MSI K8N nForce 4 Diamond Skt 939 motherboard, 2 x 1GB + 2 x 512MB Corsair TwinX 3200 RAM (Windows XP will only handle up to 3GB of RAM by the way) and a 7800GTX graphics card, and it's awesome.  Although the benefits of the dual core aren't obvious as nobody's found a way to utilise it fully yet, hence spend more on your graphics card than you would on your processor as your processor will be out of date, or at least half the price, within a day or 2.

Anyway, good luck with your project.

P.S.  My mum runs a P4 system at her office, and it sucks.  My old Athlon XP 2600+ nForce 2 Ultra 400 system whoops its' rear end.

You want to game? AMD destroys Intel in pricing and performance (and even dual core CPU setups). If you can wait awhile, you can pick up an AMD Socket M2 system, due out Q2 2006, which will support DDR2. Quite a low blow against Intel, there.

They should be ashamed to say they have a P4

So it seems like AMD is the way to go for gaming. what would be a compaacble AMD cpu to my p4 3.2Ghz ht. I'm not looking to spending $$$ again just one comparable to mine. I want to get same speed or better, but the AMD speed and Intel speed confuses me. I know how they work but not how they compare. I wished that the 478 pin could use pci-e then I wouldn't have to go through this.

Thanks for all your input
