The ignorants solution. You call me anti-American like your friend Fancy Bollocks all the time, but you never give a serious viewpoint to back your statement. If I say something about Bush, I'm anti-American. Grow up.usmarine2007 wrote:
I know an even simpler solution. Those people who bash something American but don't want to be called anti- American can go to a forum in their own country and bash away.Pug wrote:
Right, but I'm trying to explain the behavior just as you are. "Why am I being called anti-American?" Well, it's because most Americans DON'T make a separation between the gov't and the public. I believe its pretty much ingrained in the culture...so how exactly do we unlearn our culture?
In other words, gov't criticism is more likely to be taken personally...sorry. A fatal flaw...good luck dealing with it.
Plus there's the lack of tone on the internet.
I have never said that. I think Bush is an idiot for the most part. My problem with you at times is you can't seem to talk about anything else.sergeriver wrote:

Are you insane? Read again dude, lol. I talk a lot more about Religion, BF2142, Global Warming or Israel than Bush. Seriously, man. But, yes I confess I don't like him very much.usmarine2007 wrote:

Wait a second here Kmarion! Now your posting facts, like how the US is a better place to live? I was starting to understand that illegal immigrants were coming here, because it's just an ok place to live, but most importantly for the poor wretches, its got a big hole in the fence, so it will be easy to get into. Because damn that Australia country is too far to row our boat to! Seriously I love Australia, but I thought this was a discussion about the deteriorating image of the US. Being a BBC poll, which is controlled by some of the most liberal people in the world, I don't think it has a very strong foundation to stand on. Do any of you that think less of the US, in the last few years, think that actually will make any difference? To anything? I don't, just MO.
You can't say BBC is biased against the US. The poll was conducted in 25 countries, regarding several topics about US foreign policies. I want you to be honest with yourself for just a second. Imagine you aren't American. Would your opinion about the US foreign policies be better or worse now than the one you had when Clinton was at the office?(T)eflon(S)hadow wrote:

Countries like Ireland, Norway, Australia etc. have a higher standard of living than the US. The UK has a comparable standard of living, typically outside the top 10 but within the top 15.Wikipedia wrote:

Who can say where a better place to live is? Isn't it all relevant? Economics are important but are not the single most determining factor. I can say I feel I live in the greatest country on earth. But I don't waste my time in trying to tear someone else's country down to try and promote my beliefs. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and should be given respect.(T)eflon(S)hadow wrote:

Ireland has a serious immigration problem too at the moment. You proferred the immigration issue up as some sort of hard-and-fast confirmation of US as 'best country ever', which as I stated is arguably a purely subjective matter. Modern life is so complex and how 'good' a country is can be judged on so many criteria that alluding to the US as some kind of heaven on earth is simply patriotism at best, idiocy at worst.(T)eflon(S)hadow wrote:
No Cameron, I really don't have difficulty, with that I clearly stated that is my opinion. I am a very patriotic person, and I have been since I was a young kid. However I don't understand your point about people wanting to come here, to the US, just based on our lax border security and law enforcement. As you stated so that the poor wretches have a good chance, or was that your sarcasm as to my opinion as the US being one of the best places to hang your hat? So they travel the world just hoping to get in any country? Hey the US has weak immigration and border security, let's try that one! I lol'ed, seriously what is your point?CameronPoe wrote:
I think Teflon has difficulty with the fact that 'the best country' is a purely subjective opinion of every individual on the planet. People sowing soccer balls in deepest darkest Africa for ten cents a day would no doubt find anywhere but where they are right now as an attractive place to go. The fact that the US has such lax border security and law enforcement when it comes to illegal immigration just helps the poor wretches decide which country they'd prefer to chance getting into.
According to the Human Development Index of 2006, the US is 8th.Bertster7 wrote:

His facts are all from Wikipedia, who take their facts from the Economist survey of standard of living. I mentioned that the US has a pretty high standard of living, just outside the top ten.Countries like Ireland, Norway, Australia etc. have a higher standard of living than the US. I'm betting our educational system did not do us well in that formula.sergeriver wrote:

That's not standard of living though. That's HDI. One of the factors in determing HDI is standard of living, but there are other factors involved too.sergeriver wrote:

No, I never said they were the same. HDI includes many issues like life expectancy, literacy and education, health, child welfare and standard of living.Bertster7 wrote:

As a well travelled person I can tell you the stats largely seem accurate. USA - seems like a good place to live. Scandinavia - great place to live. Turkey - ok, but not great. Morocco - no thanks. Palestine - ridiculously poor.usmarine2007 wrote:
Blah blah blah. I have seen studies in many magazines about US cities and which one has the best standard of living. For example, one said Cleveland gets an F, the other one says Cleveland gets an A-, and another says Cleveland gets a C.
My point is, it is all a bunch of crap and it is up to you what you want to believe.
Why did you start with the top ten crap anyhow? Who cares if we're all happy?Bertster7 wrote:

I would say pay attention to the terrorists hating America more now thanks to GWB. If regular persons from all around the World have a more negative view towards America, then imagine which view the terrorists have. I agree with you the thread has derailed into a "my country is better than yours" BS.Pug wrote:

Oh right, you're telling us that (insert country here) is better...time to rub our noses in it...
Who cares?
The reason why people continue to rattle the anti-American sword is that there is always somebody who has to throw out a barb...when it really means nothing because all countries near the top are doing fine...
Unfortunately I see the tone in most of these threads being:
"Pay attention to the international impact your country is having".
"Gosh I wish you would do something about it".
"And, in conclusion we're better than you America."
So...is sacrificing the topic worth it? (Don't worry, I'm sure I'll be at it again soon...)
The constructive nature of this thread went sour quickly...thank God we ain't diplomats.
I ask for a deep breath - a Poll came out - says the US isn't loved overseas as much anymore - what as an American are you going to do about it? And what as a non-American are you going to do about it?

I was merely countering the 'argument' of those who have been saying the US is the best at everything and it's the best place to live. I always made very clear in my posts that the US is a very good place to live, just not quite the best. The UK, I believe, is one place behind the US in the same study.Pug wrote:

I'm a non-American. So, I'm going to do nothing whatsoever about it. It's an issue for the government of the US and to a lesser extent the people of the US to sort out. If they don't, it'll be their loss.Pug wrote:

Rise above the argument then if the difference between "the best" and "almost as good" is "essentially the same". You are aware of this, and so is the one doing the arguing. All you are doing is stoking the fire. If on one hand, we are supposed to sing a big global kumbaya...splitting hairs is counterproductive.Bertster7 wrote:
