Sorry for yet another “Is this rig any good” thread, but I’d appreciate some feedback. I know there’s a few guys on these forums who know their shit.
I’m considering buying:
Mother Board: Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 Intel Socket 775
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
2GB RAM: G.Skill F2-6400PHU2-2GBNR
Video Card: Palit Pal7900GS – Sonic
2x HDD (Raid 0): Seagate ST 380811AS
PSU: Hiper HPU-4K580
Case: Cooler Master RC-331KKR1
Altogether it would cost about AUD $1740 from Scorpion but of course I’ll look around for better prices. I don’t care what it looks like, but I want it to be good value for money.
I’ve chosen a mid range video card, but the mother board has two 16xPCI-E slots, so I can go stupid with video later if I want. My current PC has an AMD Athlon 2400 XP and a GeForce 5200 FX, so I think the card I’ve chosen will keep me happy for a little while. A mate of mine helped me choose the parts (thanks Wookie), and he was dismayed that I didn’t go for a $1000 card, but ATM I just can’t justify an extra $700 for slightly better graphics.
My plan was to get a good motherboard and upgrade all the other stuff over time. I was going to get a single core processor and upgrade later, but then I realised the dual cores were getting very cheap. I’ll probably chuck in another Gig of RAM in a few months and a new GPU (or two) in a year or so after DX10 comes out.
One concern I have is the mobo doesn’t seem to have an IDE connector, so I don’t think I can use my current DVD drive to install Windows. Is there another kind of connector used for DVD drives?
