Sorry for yet another “Is this rig any good” thread, but I’d appreciate some feedback. I know there’s a few guys on these forums who know their shit.

I’m considering buying:

Mother Board: Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6 Intel Socket 775
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6400
2GB RAM: G.Skill F2-6400PHU2-2GBNR
Video Card: Palit Pal7900GS – Sonic
2x HDD (Raid 0): Seagate ST 380811AS
PSU: Hiper HPU-4K580
Case: Cooler Master RC-331KKR1

Altogether it would cost about AUD $1740 from Scorpion but of course I’ll look around for better prices. I don’t care what it looks like, but I want it to be good value for money.

I’ve chosen a mid range video card, but the mother board has two 16xPCI-E slots, so I can go stupid with video later if I want. My current PC has an AMD Athlon 2400 XP and a GeForce 5200 FX, so I think the card I’ve chosen will keep me happy for a little while. A mate of mine helped me choose the parts (thanks Wookie), and he was dismayed that I didn’t go for a $1000 card, but ATM I just can’t justify an extra $700 for slightly better graphics.

My plan was to get a good motherboard and upgrade all the other stuff over time. I was going to get a single core processor and upgrade later, but then I realised the dual cores were getting very cheap. I’ll probably chuck in another Gig of RAM in a few months and a new GPU (or two) in a year or so after DX10 comes out.

One concern I have is the mobo doesn’t seem to have an IDE connector, so I don’t think I can use my current DVD drive to install Windows. Is there another kind of connector used for DVD drives?

thats pr0. you could run BF2/BF2142 well on that rig. i'm supposing that's what you'd be doing?

yes it does. that little green one is IDE. they just left it off the list, presumably because its obvious or something.

That's what I thought, but it would suck if I put it all together and couldn't load an OS

haha, when i read that, i thought "wtf?" instantly. i've never heard of a DVD drive having anything other than IDE.

btw, another note, if it says it has a "PATA" connector, its the same thing.

Go to centrecom.com.au the shipping costs 36$ to nsw thats where im getting my shit from they are very cheap aswell. And you should get the g.skill 2gbpk ram it costs $380 and has cas 4 latency which is better then cas 5 you have.

hmmm, sucks they don't have newegg in austrailia.  3 bills for your vid card seem a bit steep, especially for a gs.  got any friends in the states that could order your products from newegg for ya?  then have them ship it to ya!!!

It's $300 Australian dollars. That's about US $235.

I thought cas4 was only good if you want to OC....?

OK that's sorted, a UDMA ATA 100/66/33 connector is apparently an IDE connector (according to wikipaedea) and as you say, there's one in the picture (the green one).

OP: You don't need a $1000 card. A $600 will do you just fine.

they do make SATA interface drives, but they're expensive.

Cas 4 is better for oc'ing but its only $20 or $30 more so overall it gives more performance

hey mate,
yeh nice system, i see your in NSW, and the delivery fee from Scorpion tech is quite expensive as they are in Vic.
you might get it cheaper from a NSW site... www.i-tech.com.au

do not get that mobo, its a rip off to expensive for its features, and only has a 965 chipset..
i would recommend getting this mobo- http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/20500   this mobo is very very good... i have it.
and this RAM http://www.scorptec.com.au/product/20195

oh... and you cant do SLI on the board you specified or the one i specified.. only Crossfire, so you will be better off going for a ATI card.

X1950pro maybe?

good luck mate.

Ram is same as im going to get, but that i-tech site is overpriced so hes better off going with centrecom.com.au they are really cheap and shipping to nsw is 36$

More stable for OCing. But if theres no OCing the memory, Cas4 and Cas5 is pretty much the same shit on an intel.

great processor, not a fan of the brandname of the ram/psu u have chosen (although they are high end products)... i'd look at crosair for the ram and antec for the psu

One concern I have about mobos is some can only do 8x PCI-E when using both if the 16x PCI-E slots (some can only do one at 16x and one at 4x). Can the mobo suggested above use both at 16x? I think it only does 8x. Or what about the ASUS P5WDG2-WS-PRO? It has the 975X chipset too, but it's a bit more expensive. I don't know if there are any mobos that can utilise both 16x slots at 16x speed simultaneously.

I'm thinking maybe one ASUS EAX1650XTCF-2DHT-256 video card and get another one later.

Actually. At the top it says
"Asus P5WDG2-WS-PRO 975X, CORE2DUO, PCIEx16, DDRII, SATAII, RAID, GbLAN, ATX"

And on the specifications it says:
CPU
- Socket 775 for Intel Pentium Processor Extreme Edition / Pentium D / Pentium 4 / Celeron CPU
- Intel® EM64T / EIST / Hyper-Threading Technology
- Intel Hyper-Threading technology ready

So i dunno

If it says that then surely it must be.
