Dimebag??? Loads better guitarists!
Whoa Whoa Whoa.  I'm not even a huge pantera fan, just a guitarist by profession, and that statement makes me shiver.  Dimebag was one of the most innovative, fuck you all, I don't care guitarists, EVER.  Anyone who really knows their instrument and music in general, will KNOW that Dimebag is one of the sickest ever.   Plus he got gunned down onstage, tell me something more rockstar than that.  Watch some pantera live dvd's, then tell me there's loads better.

Edit, if we're talking about sickest ever though, there's probably some schmuck in the mountains, who has never been on a stage, or a cd, that could rip everyone's face off.  Fame does not decide who's good, just who's popular.
Yeah, I'm not really a huge Pantera fan either but I still know Dimebag is amazing. I mean, I still like them, I'm just not exactly the biggest metalhead, more of the punk kid but I still enjoy metal. I play guitar too, I'm not too good. Most of Dimebag's songs I can't play at all. They're just so hard to play. And I can play the few Metallica songs I know pretty damn perfectly, at least all but the solos.

My vote goes to Dimebag

Elvis' death killed all he started. Nothing like him has yet to erupt since his death. There are at least bad duplicates of the other ones.
Elvis didn't start rock and roll. Please research Little Richard for just one example. At the time though, a black face on TV wasn't appealing to the white audience, so the executives put a white face (Not just Elvis either, plenty of other white performers recreated Little Richard songs, but left out the energy and dancing) to the music to make it appeal to its audience more.

I'm NOT trying to say that Elvis wasn't influential, or talented. He was both in a very important way. However, to say that his death killed what HE started, and that nothing like him has come since his death....well, Elvis was a duplicate to begin with. He didn't start anything, he just did it in a way that appealed to many people, and truth be told, he probably did it better than the originators. It happens. See: Eminem.

It's hard to say really. I voted for Lennon simply because he was arguably the most politically active musician in that list. Now, I know that's a bit of a sideline from the topic of "Loss to music" but I think musicians have an amazing opportunity to use their media to influence others, and I think Lennon could have done some amazing things through his music.

In terms of just creating sound, I'd have voted for Hendrix. Not to take anything away from the other musicians, but Hendrix had something so unique during his time, who knows what else he could have done.

You guys are very narrow minded in who you like, forget about how good they were in their own genres, metal for example. Yes it is good but it means sod all to music and hasn't moved on music what-so-ever. This is why Burton and Dimebag mean nothing, yes they were cool but not revoloutionary whatso ever.

Bassist better than Burton easy. Jaco Pastorius, John Paul Johns, Flea (maybe over-rated, but definately better than Burton)

Remember to decide songs that you like, and not to think "I like the music JUST because I like the band"

If you're man enough to say you know and like music you can say things like "ABBA were fantastic", "Blondie were fantastically influential".

Yes they were crap in my opinion but you can't deny that they were good.

Going to original title, most of those deaths just glorified their style of music, not change it.

If anyone has a counter arguement with real justifications let me hear it! I love music debates.
