People haven't noticed that it has went down for the third straight month. Long ways to go but it has stopped and started going the other way. Don't worry though China will just under cut the dollar again.

Even if it does balance, the Gov will just use a balanced budget as an excuse for some dumb discretionary fiscal policy bill or expanded spending on some pet project.

I think the deficit will be gone by 2012 like Iraq will have a functioning democracy by 2012.

Not exactly a winners attitude. Luckily not everyone dwells in the misery of yesterday.

If it does go down, then whatever president is in office at the time will take full credit for it.

I admit that I'm very pessimistic about Iraq. However, my post was mostly just a comment on the credibility of the Bush administration. They told us Iraq was going to be a democracy, a dozen times they said that victory was just around the corner (e.g., when the Iraqis voted for a new government), at one point they even said "mission accomplished." Over and over, they promised more than they delivered. "The misery of yesterday" matters because people who made a tremendous number of mistakes in the past will probably continue to do so in the future. The fact is, the Bush administration doesn't know what they're talking about with Iraq and I think they don't know what they're talking about with the deficit.

considering the entire world will be gone in 2012, then yes... so will the debt.

There are a lot of things most Democrats "forget" when a Republican is President, and Republicans tend to do a lot a likewise "forgetting" when there is a Democratic President.

So in six years time the budget might just about balance?  But now a massive chunk of that balanced budget will be paying off the interest on the debt accrued under bush, so it's not that impressive.

Clinton didn't just quickly put the break on the deficit after getting into office, he was actually reducing the debt.

It's obvious that the deficit will dissappear some time after Bush leaves office because it HAS to or the economy wll crash again.

And anyway, when the budget first went into the red it was predicted it would return into the black in about 2010, although they never conceived it would hit the heights Bush achieved.  Great job considering that bankruptcy and long term economic damage were the stated goals of Al Qaeda

Great job Bush, you acted exactly like Bin Laden (allegedly) predicted!  If there had been a president with an IQ over 40 in office, I'm pretty certain that the tactic of drawing America out into expensive and unwinnable conflicts wouldn't have even been worth trying in Bin Ladens eyes.

This additonal tax revenue will only go so far if inflation isn't kept in check.

Funny you mention that. Anytime Clinton talks about the balanced budgets and national debt reduction that happened on his watch, he NEVER fails to give a nod to the (GOP) Congress that helped him do it.

Sadly, I believe this thread arose out of a failure to distinguish between "deficit" and "debt", and would love to see the results of a nationwide poll quizzing American adults on the distinction. In this kind of environment, is it any wonder why the GOP focuses the national discussion away from their hypocritical addiction to spending, and instead toward Important Issues such as gay marriage (ie, stop the homos), immigration (ie, stop the wetbacks), or the War On Terror (ie, stop the evil bearded bogeymen)?

Anyone who thinks this news is positive for the Bush administration should have their head examined.  The government's expenses are slowly coming down to a level on par with their revenues - BRAVO. That's like cheering for a teenage daughter who only runs up $1500 on your credit card this month versus $2000 last month. And now that it's Nancy Pelosi in charge of picking up little Georgie's tab and not and not Coach Hastert, you can damn well bet that the deficit's going to keep coming down.

I certainly hadn't noticed that the deficit had gone down for the third straight month - because IT HASN'T.

Nor has it started going the other way.

Nor did China "undercut" the dollar. They didn't do anything with their dollar reserves. If you want someone to blame, you can look no further than the overly-jumpy FX traders on Wall Street.
