California is the armpit of the Great American West.
While what's going on right now in CA is regrettable, it is still completely undeniable that CA is one of the best states in the nation, and definitely better than Washington. My proof? How about the fact that CA has the 5th largest GLOBAL economy? Or how about how that massive health care system, while in trouble, has not toppled under the weight of the largest influx of illegal immigrants in the history of America? By the way, we saw that as a problem a long time ago, and through the proposition system (a little thing we have where the people can legislate directly) we created a law that said it was not the burden of the taxpayers to educate the children of people who are technically not there. However, the Supreme Court and the rest of the country couldn't see past their own noses and said it was "unconstitutional", and since only a few other border states really had a problem, the Congress did not see it as politically expedient to make a constitutional ammendment or something. Seriously, the question of illegal immigration seems to me to be a paradox with one set of conclusions, and everyone else is making the opposite conclusion. Here's how I see it
1: The illegal immigrants acknowledge that they are in this country to the federal government, but since they are here illegally, they suffer the punishment of being deported.
2: They do NOT acknowledge that they are here to the federal government, in which case they get NOTHING. Why? CAUSE THEY AREN'T THERE!!!!
But no, that's not the way our politicians think it should work. Our politicians are like our businessmen, always looking for a new market. If they can get the illegals to vote and vote for them, then they'll have control over the government and be able to advance their own personal agendas. So they cater to them, with things like signs and ballots in spanish, drivers licenses, amnesty, water holes in the desert???, entitlement programs, worker programs, even social security.... FROM A SYSTEM THATS GOING BROKE AS IT IS!!!! Thanks for "fixing" the social security system old people, as someone who's 18 I KNOW I need to seriously prepare for retirement, cause I'm gonna pay into a system and not get shit from it.
Oddly enough though, the thing that gets me the most is amnesty, because its not fair. It's not fair to my father, who immigrated to this country from Great Britain in 1980, after completing a doctorate in Fuels and Energies from Leeds University; which he was able to attend because he had grown up in British Guyana. He grew up in South America, in a third world country. He managed to get to college, where he excelled. And then he came here to America, legally. For his first year here he lived a very sparing life consuming only a few vegetables, a loaf of bread and a chicken each week. In 5 years he had a house. He became a citizen shortly thereafter. He loves this country, and I've found him to be more of a patriot than most people who grew up here. But here's a man with a doctorate in a field of chemical engineering who has to wait the standard amount of time to become a resident and later a citizen. Here's someone who can and has made a very positive contribution to our society. Now tell me why some half wit person without even a high school level education, nor the ability OR wish to speak English get a free spot ahead of my dad simply because he was bold enough to break our laws? Why should the criminal be rewarded for his crime?
