In the UK there is a serious problem with prisoners absconding from open prisons. The police are not allowed to issue wanted posters of these prisoners, because publishing photos of them counts as a violation of their human rights. I think this is totally ridiculous, especially when compared to the new police scheme to shame litterers by publishing photos of them in papers.

I'm usually quite outspoken in my support of human rights laws, but this is stupid.

I'm glad to see the Lord Chancellor has put an end to this madness by the police.

Incidents like this give the HRA, which is on the whole an excellent work of legislation, a bad name. It's not even like the text of the HRA does prevent them from releasing photos of prisoners or suspects if there is any public interest in doing so.

The whole country has gone mad. The British government is full of complete idiots. They worry more about Criminals rights and Immegrants and people of ethnic minority than normal British citizans.

Thank fuck for the few people with some sense, like Lord Falconer, who dismiss these things as "absolute nonsense".

Yeah was reading about this today and couldn't believe it. A few months ago some other prisoner with a history of going on the run was allowed to go shopping on his own to get him ready for his Eventual release and surprise, surprise he vanished. Open prisons are a joke.

Isnt it just a way to get them out of jail really, I read not so long ago the UK prison system is only 100 places short of Total capacity, and letting them out I would expect is just a lame ass way of getting them out quicker.

Possibly, As far as I'm aware the jails are almost at bursting point and judges are having to give people bollocks things like asbos or community rehabilitation orders etc to keep them out of prison (I may be wrong but its how it looks to me). But why let the murders escape? Surly they can let the tax evaders etc escape

Irrelevant. The issue is in preferences given to criminals and minorities over everyone else which is, when it comes down to it, discrimination.

politicians get their careers screwed over if they arn't politically correct and caring and crap even if they think otherwise
the sad truth is that we (society, the media, everyone) tear into politicians for not being PC and then moan when they are overly PC and it tends to be hard to find a balance as one politician rarely gets anything done on their own these days
