In the UK there is a serious problem with prisoners absconding from open prisons. The police are not allowed to issue wanted posters of these prisoners, because publishing photos of them counts as a violation of their human rights. I think this is totally ridiculous, especially when compared to the new police scheme to shame litterers by publishing photos of them in papers.
I'm usually quite outspoken in my support of human rights laws, but this is stupid.
I'm glad to see the Lord Chancellor has put an end to this madness by the police.

Incidents like this give the HRA, which is on the whole an excellent work of legislation, a bad name. It's not even like the text of the HRA does prevent them from releasing photos of prisoners or suspects if there is any public interest in doing so.
