Yup. The lag time is probably to do with a transition between memory and pagefile. If you had more RAM it wouldn't happen. Alternatively turn down the texture quality so you've got less data filling up all your memory.
lack of RAM is the single most prevalent performance barrier in BF2.  It's the most inefficiently written game I can think of.

i have 1 gig of ram, and there are no more slots for additional sticks. My friend plays with a Radeon 9550 PCI (not PCI- Express) 1 gig of ram, his computer is like 6 years old and he can play bf2 on low flawlessly. He also has 2 desk fans blowing into the tower. Could Heat have anything to do with the lag?

you're getting lag because your computer can barely run the game.  running bf2 on a PCI card is really pushing it.  I doubt a 9550 even has vsync.  you may as well be running the game with onboard video.  does your computer have an AGP slot?

what resolution are you running?  where do you keep your settings?  9550 AGP is still dragging the performance envelope.

as for the vsync, I'd say check an ATI or Catalyst Control Center specific forum.  I'd suggest trying a lower resolution, turning down your draw distance,  no AA, find out if you can fit higher capacity RAM into your two slots. upgrading your video card to the 1600 series or this:

Make sure it's a card that your power supply can support.

Because the threads got merged, my post may have gotten buried and went unnoticed.  I used to have a very similar problem and then I found out how to fix it so I am reposting just to be sure you don't miss this.  I know the problem you're having is very frustrating and I am forever grateful to the person who fixed it for me.

Do you have Webroot Spysweeper?  If so uninstall it.  Check out this thread.

That is no doubt your problem.  With the 4.5 spysweeper, webroot went from requiring 128mb to 5.0 requiring 256mb.  I run 1.5gb of ram but had the same problem with the pauses even with spysweeper shut down.  The newest version is 5.2.? and it still causes the wierd lag and pauses.  Keep ahold of your Access code and you can still reinstall the program if you want to get rid of some spyware or while your surf for porn.

I just today bought a new video card hopeing it would solve my problem. I HAD a Radeon 9550, this card was crap but still played bf2 @ low, when i would play, every 20-30  seconds  the game would pause for about 1/2 a second maby even less. This got extremely annoying so i went out and got a new card ( Geforce 7300GS AGP 8X  512mb DDR2) this card is playing bf2 @ med/high settings with no lag, but still every 20-30 seconds it will pause just like it did with the 9550 for about 1/2-1/4 of a second. I know its not a hardware problem because i have the 7300 and 1 gig of ram and my processor speed is 3.00 Ghz. Anyone know whats causing the pausing. (its not lag, im 100% sure, my ping is usually under 50)
i ran bf2 on medium with my old 9550 256MB

Glad to hear it. https://members.shaw.ca/retox/thumbsup.png

Truth is, although it is possible, it is unlikely anyone would get a virus or spyware from BF2.  Most ISP's have some form of built in security and virus checking that we don't even see.  My ISP uses F-Secure before anything even reaches me.

So I turn everything off, including the services I don't need.  I never have lag beyond my mouse (cordless but worth it) cutting out once in a while.  99.999% of the time I have perfect gaming.  When I'm done I turn everything back on and run a couple quick scans with Avast and Spybot/Ad-Aware and I know I'm clean.

I highly recommend turning off every unneeded background program, don't let anything run except the game you are playing and your Ventrillo or Teamspeak.  Especially turn off AV software because most of them heuristically scan every packet coming in which can equate to serious lag.

It reminds me of the old DOS days where you had to create a boot menu just for playing games with optimized memory mapping because the config was different from Windows.  I used to have to reboot to play Doom and then again to go back into Windows.  Mind you that was Win3.1 so boot-up was pretty fast.

Modern games are pigs, none more than BF2, and need everything they can get.  Every task being run in the background will exponentially effect performance due to clock cycle timings, etc.

Did you use the ati driver clean before you added the nvidia card?   Also try turning off EAX and VOIP...
Turn dynamic lighting and shadows to low or off...   and another gig of ram would help a lot....
Love is the answer
