First, look at the picture.

The check mark on the green circle means I have my front speakers connected. My speakers are connected to the rear panel of my computer.

Now, the only way for my headset to work is if I unplug my speakers from the rear panel, and plug in my headset into those jacks.

Now, I have 2 jacks on the front of my computer, one for headphones, and one for a microphone. Is there anyway I can leave my speakers plugged in, and just use the two jacks on the front of my computer?

Guessing your headset has two independent jacks, one for mic and one for headphones?  Just plug them in the front, putting headphones in will automatically play sound through the headphones and not the speakers.  Unless im missing something

I'm pretty sure you'll have to plug your headphones (green plug) into your speakers (if they have a jack) in order for you to hear through both. I do at least.

What happens if you plug the headphones in the front panel?

EDIT: I can have both plugged in simultaneously

Unlikely he has a mic input in the speakers though

It cuts the sound off through the speakers.

That's the problem I have with mine. My computer is too far away for the split cords to reach both so my options are:
1) sound through headphones and mic works
2) sound through speakers, no sound through headphones, mic works
or
3) soound through both headphones and speakers, no mic

If my speakers were closer to my pc, I'd be able to have sound through both and a working mic.

Well my headset has one plug for the mic, and one for the headphones. If I plug both into the front, I think I can hear stuff, but I can't talk. If I plug the headphones into one of my speakers, and the mic into the back, I can hear, and still can't talk or something. Only way I can get it to work is to unplug the speakers, and plug the headset into there.

I've tried many combinations: both in front, one in the rear with one in the speaker, etc etc.

Like I said, it only works one way, and it's a pain to have to unplug and keep reaching around my computer all the time.

EDIT: Note at the top left of the picture, it says "2 speakers or headphones" meaing I can only have one or the other. The only other options in the drag down list are 4 speakers, or 6 speakers.

wait, your mic only works when you plug your headset in the back?  do you still have the mic plugged in in front?  If your mic doesnt work either way, it might be your mic settings and not the headset or jack configuration.

Edit: You shouldnt have to unplug your speakers to get sound from the headset, it will pipe the sound through the headset to your headphones, rather then the speakers like it should.

No, I don't have the mic plugged in the back and the headphones in the front. I have both plug-ins in the back of my computer.

If I don't unplug my speakers, I will only be able to use the mic, and have to listen through my speakers, not the headphones.

Same as me but I have an 'output' jack on my speakers.

The only option I can think of for you is to either buy speakers with an output jack, or buy a splitter for your headphones/speakers so you can plug them into a single port on the pc.

Have you checked if the front panel is correctly connected to the motherboard?

Ha, yeah right. I can't open my computer because of a fan that's pretty much bolted to the side of it. Evene if I could open it, I wouldn't know how to fix it if it were disconnected.

I'm pretty sure they are though, because when I plug my headphones into the front, I can hear music and stuff when I play it on my computer.
And when I plug them both into the front, I can go into those settings (the picture) and click those two circles (the front panel), and a thing will say 'Device Connected: Heaphones" and 'Device Connected: Mic"

I try and click them, but nothing happens. Sorry if that was confusing lol.

Well I'm gunna go an play 2142. I guess my friend isn't coming on msn, so I don't even need to use my headset right now. Keep coming up with ideas, I'll karma all of you.

So do I. You need to open it slightly and unplug it, then you can open it

If you are running xp try Start-control panel-sound speech audio devices-change sound scheme-voice-select volume under voice recording.  Make sure the volume for the mic is turned up.

If I ever find the person that thought it was a good idea...

Unscrew it and put it on the back blowing out. Less hassle, more air.
1. Air now goes from front to back.
2. Parking a second fan over the CPU creates chop between the two. Having nothing above the heatsink means the air blows straight out that newly opened grill and not stuck in the case.

The F-AUDIO pinouts are listed in your motherboard's manual.

What do you want to do? Have them both going or what? If the mics the problem, change volumes and crack open Sound Recorder.

doesnt make any sense to me how you can have the mic plugged into the back considering there is no mic port according to that picture.  You must have some wires crossed if you can use your mic from a non mic jack.

There some settings where you can select either Microphone, or rear mic, which one do I pick? I think I've tried both of them, and only rear mic works.

Also, when I run the voip set up (the thing that comes up when you install 2142), the bar doesn't move when I talk into the mic. What gives? lol

Actually, there is. When I plug the mic into the pink jack in the back, I can click that pink circle there and change it to Mic.
EDIT: I can plug it into the front of my computer, and I can talk into the mic and I can also hear. Weird.

Just get a usb headset, no need to worry about jacks, from what i can see theres some sort of issue with your audio set up, becasue i use the front jacks on my pc with no problem.
