I am not very old, 28 years young actually. I am ashamed to be a part of this generation X that is full of so many lazy youngsters and I am wondering if anyone else feels the same way. I am not old enough to start with the "back in my day" stories, but I am going to start. When I was a teen we had to do the following:
-ride our bicycles everywhere
-get a paper route, or some other job shoveling snow, raking leaves, etc.
-go to the library to complete book reports
-play outside
-build tree forts
-fight with our fists
-take responsibilities for our actions
-get an ass whippin with dads belt, or moms wooden spoon and not tell our teacher/police about it
-watch TV after chores and homework were done

I think some of the older members, and perhaps younger responsible members of this forum may know what I am talking about. But I am proposing a seperation between Generation X and Generation Xbox. I am so sick of these little kids who have the world at their fingertips acting like they are so cultured because they can Google information. GET OFF YOUR ASS AND FROM BEHIND YOUR KEYBOARD AND DO SOMETHING. My point is I beleive so much technology has made our future leaders a lot lazier. Giving them the world has, in my mind, taken it away. Anyone agree say "AY", otherwise debate it but see if you can do it without Google.

Well I know I'm younger than you are and part of this generation X. I believe that older members of the generation (and of others) are very general with their conclusions of the youth these days. I for one, am very proactive with my life and I have yet to get in a fight, get fired from a job, or receive a failing grade in a class.

It's not that the majority of the youth are despicable, it's the fact that those who are stand out so much that they make the rest of us look horrible.

EDIT: I also am regular in the gym and play sports. The computer is not my 24/7 home.

I'm 27...  but I grew up loving the internet.  It sucks that online habits have led to an obesity epidemic, but I think computers have done more good than harm.  Information is so much more accessible now, and I already have an affinity for most things electronic or computer related.   I remember first getting into the net in 1996.  Things have changed a lot since then, but I think most of it has been good.

Thankfully, my lack of physical fitness hasn't rendered me an obese weeble (I've been blessed with fast metabolism), but yes, we definitely need to orient our society back toward physical activity to a point (myself included).

In all honesty though....  I think the rising cost of healthcare will force a lot of people to try to live healthier -- both in diet and exercise.

As for the generational split....  It's hard to say where exactly I fit in all that.  I don't really identify with Gen X (even being born in 1979), but I don't identify with Gen Y either.  Maybe my individualism is typical of Gen X, but I don't fully realize it....   Who knows?...

the proper term for the people you're talking about is 'generation Y.'

these are people who are currently in their teens or very early twenties.

edit: hey turqoise beat me to it.

mmm, no.  Sure there are a few kids that do that, but in general, thats a load of shit.

Personally, I ride (weather permitting) 10-15 miles a day on my bicycle, I have over a 4.0 GPA (with AP - college - classes that are weighted out of 5.0), I work at an eye clinic.. and I'm a junior. And I don't see how that generalization fits very many kids.

Pretty much...  but my brother is a Gen Y'er, so I'm still able to relate to them on many things.  I just think the emo thing is bullshit.

Emo kids suck ass and in my opinion, should all be sent to the Congo, then they'll have a reason to cry.

I'm 30 and have my own Architectural business. I know guys I went to school with, who's parents are on benefits and basically milk the system, these same guys are on benefits now and no doubt so will their kids when they get old enough.
The thing about our society is that if you really don't want to work, you can still lead a full and enjoyable life. My sister is a teacher in a school were everyones parents are on benefits and she says to her kids "do you not want to learn and get a good job, nice house and go on holidays every year?"  the kid replied. "we went on two holidays last year and both my parents are on the dole"
My sister couldn't afford to go on holiday last year at all.
All the people I went to school with who's parents worked all work now. This generation X is a direct result of bad lazy parenting by the previous generation IMO.

JahmanRed, your post is why I'm glad social services are much more limited here in America.  It's much harder to live off of the system here (despite what conservatives say), and I think that's a good thing.  Everyone able should have to work if they want to live a fulfilling life in society.

100% true.  All of the kids I know who fit your little stereotype have horrible parents...

Commie I am going to disagree with you, respectively. I think you are one of the few responsible youth that I pointed out in my original post. I think you are one of the small percentage of your generation. I would look at it more like people like yourself are not the norm of your gen, rather the exception.

Even though I'm only 17, I agree with deeznuts1245 on this. I am one who sits at my computer for about 3 hours a day on average, don't have a job, don't go to the library to do a book report, etc.

However, I do take responsibilities for my actions, unlike most of the people around me who are my age. if I fucked up, I admit it and don't go crying to mommy and blame something/someone else.

I can't drive, and if I want to get places, my mom tells me to take the bus or walk. It's up to me to get there sine I want to go there.

I'm currently in the DEP for the Navy, leaving in August 2007 to boot camp, and then going to A School to become a Corpsman.

I just really hate how because of a few certain people, I get placed into the stereotypes of 'Oh, he's just another teenager who doesn't know what he's doing,' or 'They think they know everything.'

Sucks, doesn't it?  I know what you mean.  It's funny how, even as an adult, you don't really get much respect until you become 25.  Then, you get a little more respect at 30 (so I hear) and so on.  Humans tend to be agist in nature.
