Hell if they try an take it we'll kick there ass again.
Erm, comedy it was not. Please check weblink I have. Do you really believe that oil was the main objective? What about the hundreds of people living in the Falkland Islands? Sure, some people may have realised the potential of oil in the very long-term, but to even suggest that it was at the top of Thatcher's agenda above the lives of the Falklanders...IG-Calibre wrote:
thanks for giving me a laugh mate - yeah I suppose Iraq isn't about oil either..
It was about who was the strongest. Argentina invaded to remove attention from the problems at home. The UK couldn't let that happen, it would weaken the sovereignty of the UK. And besides, Thacher wasn't going to take that kind of crap from Argentina. Oil was definitely the last thing on their minds...ProudLimey wrote:

Whatever - read the original OP link. Even in 1976 the British government were considering leasing the islands back to the Argentines as long as they could jointly exploit the oilfields. Oil was becoming even more valuable towards the 80's plus it was becoming clearer by the time just how massive those potential oilfields are in that region. You can dress it up as some British Patriotic thing if you like.ProudLimey wrote:

IG everyone knows you hate the British. You made that clear. Your opinion is fine. However I dont think many people agree with you. There is far more importance in political strength than in a bit of oil.IG-Calibre wrote:

He Just does'nt like the fact that we have more than just potatoes to offer!
Your way off man. If you can dish the medcine you should be able to take it. Even if this thread is "retalitory" it is still a valid topic. How many topics have been made about the US just because of the Iraq war? This forumis filled with people from all over the world. So, why can't we debate the problems of other countries?ATG wrote:
I think, quite frankly, that if you are going to make "baiting" topics simply to irrate somebody else then you should confine it to the junk drawer.
You never would have made this topic if it wasn't for the rather petty looking pissing match you are having with a certain cowboy.
Your point is made and taken; move along.
IG, the only reason the Falklands were invaded was because the military government of Argentina was up to its neck in economic problems and civil unrest. It was an attempt to take focus away from this problems and at the same time revive some nationalistic feeling.
UK wasn't just going to sit around and let that happen, specially with Thatcher as PM.
Neither oil or people were the motivations here, its political. Any source on the Falklands war will tell you the same.

IG doesn't listen to that logic. Britain is evil incarnate and wants to kill the world is more along the line of his views.EVieira wrote:

You are correct. After the Junta put down a third attempt to oust them they realigned themselves and then proceeded to take pressure off of themselves by focusing attention to the Falklands. As a propoganda tool they claimed soveriegnty over it in an attempts to unite the nation.EVieira wrote:

Your argument falls down on one simple point, especially when you liken it to Iraq. The one massive difference is we INVADED Iraq. That is why oil is used as a motive (for which I actually agree to an extent), but you cannot say that the British defended a terrortory of hers because of Oil. That's like stopping a thief stealing your car because of the stereo. You stop them because its yours!IG-Calibre wrote:

Oil was a non-issue for Thatcher. At present the Falklands "is a petroleum province in its infancy". During Thatcher's time research on oil around the Falklands was very basic. Only in the past 15 years or so has exploration really increased.

As for the Falklands itself: They are British islands with British people on it. Full stop.
Lmao - I don't hate the British, there are plenty of English wankers in the world all right, but I don't hate the British..
Your right there dude, and the same about the irish just more so...IG-Calibre wrote:

Population of ROI = 4.2 million
Irish people in Britain (thus doesn't include NI) = 2 million
= One third of their entire population is living in Britain (not grammatically correct but you know what I mean)

Actually, it's Richmond, a city within Greater Vancouver, as far as our media reports tell us. However, white people are a minority in Richmond (the largest racial group, however), with a large amount of Asian and East Indian populations.cyborg_ninja-117 wrote:

Falksland´s ....isn´t that where Margareth Tatchers summer-residence is located?
The war for the Falklands was basically one form of nationalism against another. Granted, the British had a good reason to flex their muscles on that one.
Sadly, Galtieri was successful in distracting his people from his own failings by invoking nationalism throughout Argentina in the war. Of course, Argentina is far from being the only country that does this kind of thing.... *hesitantly looks at Bush and then Iraq*
