Saw a Nova show on this a few years ago. The Earth's iron core shifts around. It's happened before, looking at mineral deposits in volcanic flows, scientists can see abrupt polar shifts that occured thousands or millions of years ago, dont recall exactly and I'm too lazy to find a link.
Maybe on Tuesdays it will have a lunch special with unlimited access to the VIP rooms

Ehhh...wtf? I know that this isn't going to happened as described, but magnetic pole shifts (i.e. magnetic north switching to magnetic south) have happened before.
How do you know?
Edgar Casey is frightenly on the money in his predictions and he says 2012 is when it will happen.

IIRC, a couple hundred years ago, the poles really screwed up, and there was several poles all over the world. There was a north pole in Tahiti, I believe or it could have been an excuse for the 'scientists' to check out the natives...

The worlds already ended, but you lot are too engrossed in BF2S that you have failed to notice.
They covered this on Qi. It is natural and we are actually well overdue. The absolute magnetic North is no longer on the North Pole but has already shifted down to North Canada.

Some of the interesting things I dug up from a while back was that some people predict that other materials would become conductive if we had a complete polar reverse. Wouldn't it be crazy funny if plastic was all the sudden, the most conductive material on earth? Or what about wood? They say that it's very possible because the molecules themselves would flop around their polarity.
They've done core sample from the Marianas trench in the middle of the Atlantic and found that polar reverses have happened several times in the past. They've seen that the magnetite settles on the ocean floor in the direction of the north pole and from that, determined that it happens every few thousand years. If you look at a diagram of how the north pole constantly moves back and forth like a pendulum, swinging more and more each year until it completely flops. The South pole becomes the North, etc.
They also speculate that the sun has an effect on this. The sun is actually what causes the earth to spin by blasting us with neutrinos. Some claim these are the smallest particles known to man. So small that they pass right between the atoms composing you. Billions and trillions of them pass through your body and straight down the the center of the earth where it is eventually slowed down by the density of the materials down there.
Scientists have set up two neutrino observatories, one in California called the Sudbury Neutrino observatory and another in japan named Super Kamiakandi or something like that. Basically, they dug down as deep as they could in borite mines, which seem to be about as dense of a surrounding as they could find and have created huge round balls of light receptacles to monitor the activity. What happens is that the neutrino, when in contact with heavy water (the same material used in nuclear rectors where the substitute the oxygen atom with 2 deutrium atoms to give you H2O2), anyways, when neutrinos come into contact with the heavy water, it produces a brief light flash which these observatories monitor and track.
When the sun has a major event like a sunspot which sends a sudden blast of neutrinos towards the earth, we get a light show called Aurora Borealis (The Northern Lights). When the blast is large enough, it can actually effect the earth's rotation, slowing it down or speeding it up like wind through a fan. Some say this will be the cause of the polar flop.
