As far as availablility is concerned, theyre not hard to find. I was in best buy the other day and saw like 5 of them sitting on the shelves. However, as I recall, each was about $800, not to mention that EACH bluray disk cost about 15-20.

Dont bet on anyone hoppin over to this new tech until another year or so when it becomes a lot cheaper.

If the PS3 continues to be as successful as it already is in the Japanese and American markets, and proves itself in the Euro market later next year, the PS3 alone could very well be the deciding factor in the next gen BD/HD war.  But The Xbox has a slight advantage saying "If the Blu-ray disc were to come out on top, Microsoft would not hesitate to bring out a BD-DVD add on for the Xbox360."  So either way, Xbox will be successful.  Once the PS3 is in full force, you will see the prices for the BD-DVD drives drop dramatically.  The prices may come down to the price of a standard DVD, maybe 2 or 3 dollars more.

Yes, Microsoft have gone down the road of HD-DVD and solidly back it, but they aren't limiting themselves in that should Blu-Ray prove to be the more popular format they will release an add-on player for the 360. This has already been stated by Microsoft.

Although I would imagine the PS3 is a Blu-Ray player in the same way that the PS2 is a DVD player.

I reckon it'll be rubbish. Still, you can't really complain for the price. Although I rather spend the money on a Blu-Ray burner for PC, about the same price.

For £500 certainly hope not

The PSX released in japan a few year's ago (a kind of mediaplayer playstation 2 not the playstation 1) had a good dvd player and was the equiv of around £350-£400 if I remember right.

I reckon it'll be substandard.

I'd say wait. It'll only be a year or so till prices plummet. Till then manage off DVDs. You can get nice DVD players, HD capable ones for about £50-60. Much better price. Shame you can't fit much HD video on a DVD.

Is Blu Ray like HDTV in that you need a HD monitor/TV to really see the difference?

Yes. You will get no benefit from an Blu Ray without an HDTV. Preferably one that is 1080p capable - which are rare.

Blu Ray is losing the format war to HD-DVD. I would wait before dropping a shitload of cash on a player.

I would wait too.

I don't know that HD-DVD will win the format war. Despite the fact that Sony tend to fuck these things up (a la Betamax). HD-DVD will have horrible DRM rubbish, which is offputting.

Don't bother with any of them (certainly not yet - unless you're rich). Just get a nice Viiv system and use that (although they aren't properly supported yet).

I am a bit confused, I have been lead to believe that blu-ray is significantly more expensive than HD-DVD, which will probably seal it's fate just like betamax.  Now I am aware these blu-ray players are going for around a grand a time (my dad's first DVD player was £800 and just over a year later a comparible player was going for about £400) but there obviously going to go down in price so where is this argument?

It certainly cant be found in films:

http://play.com/DVD/Blu-ray/RNR/3-/1130 … oduct.html

That blu-ray disc is the same price the DVD was

http://play.com/DVD/HD%20DVD/RNR/3-/161 … oduct.html

That HD-DVD is about the same price to....

Average price on play.com for both format's is around £15 so I cant see where this idea about Blu-day being so expensive in comparison is coming from?  I guess the blank disc's arent going cheap but again that should come down, so why is it I am hearing HD-DVD will win, Blu-ray is the better contender, and as far as I have seen, doesnt cost that much more than its rival (if anything).

Only thing puting me of buying one is the fact every single one of them look ugly.  I mean I know your not exactly going to stare at it, but for a £1000 (or there about's) your wanting it to look like a £1000 bit of kit, and these dont, the pioneer elite looks like an old VCR I have lying in the loft!

neither is winning the war yet despite what people say. High def disks sel about 20k max (movies) per title compared to millipns of standard DVDs.

Just use the ps3 or the xbox add on (limited and as crappy as it may be)

Blu Ray isn't made buy Sony like beta max or umd.

They are just using it as their main format for PS3 and in return PS3 is the main thing that should sell Blu-Ray format.

Yes it is. Not just Sony, but Sony are a part of the partnership that designed and are promoting it.

Forget about it. Right now, getting Blu Ray for the PC is an even more risky venture than buying ZIP Drives were when they first came out. If they somehow survive against HD-DVD's, then availability will increase, lowering drive price.

Additionally, disc drives like DVD's and CD's are optical, not hard drives.
