"President George W Bush has signed into law a historic agreement allowing the United States to export civilian nuclear fuel to India."

President Bush described the new law as an important achievement for the whole world.

"The bill will help keep America safe by paving the way for India to join the global effort to stop the spread of nuclear weapons," he said.
"After 30 years outside the system, India will now operate its civilian nuclear energy programme under internationally-accepted guidelines and the world is going to be safer as a result."

"Correspondents say that India sees the deal as a tacit acceptance of its emergence as a global nuclear power.
But some say that by making an exception for India, the US will find it difficult to rein in the nuclear ambitions of North Korea and Iran. "

Why is the USA so willing to give away nuclear technology and fuel to a former Soviet aligned state, with a Cast system, human rights abuses by the military and corruption rife in its government? Yet so against Iran developing it's own? Should North Korea be delt with and brought to the table also?
Should Iran be brought to in to the nuclear family now that India is sucking at the tit?

That threat was a counter threat. Wasn't "military might" mentioned by President Bush? Axis off Evil is a big name call too in anyone's book.
India hasn't signed the Nuclear Proliferation pact. so the US shouldn't be sending them nuclear technology & fuel period.

India does not have threaten the way NK does. Kim Jong-il has a history of creating a crisis to get what he wants.

Are you saying that killer elephants named after Osama bin Laden aren't a threat?

The key is that India will accept inspectors into their country to ensure everything is going where it should, etc. Hans Brix will be there!

lol@sig

Hans Brix, when did we start listening to him?

The Independent:
"Mr Blix, speaking to The Independent, said the Attorney General's legal advice to the Government on the eve of war, giving cover for military action by the US and Britain, had no lawful justification. He said it would have required a second United Nations resolution explicitly authorizing the use of force for the invasion of Iraq last March to have been legal."

We will probably listen to him when their is money to be made and he is going with the flow..............

To be honest, I support this move.  I think siding with India on the nuke issue is looking ahead.  We may actually find ourselves attacking Pakistan one day.  Iran doesn't seem like a threat to me, but Pakistan really does, and we'll need India to help us with that one.

Agreed, but Pakistan is the coalitions best and most strategic Allie in the current war of terror. I would say that your assumption is correct though. It begs the question. What will be the backlash from a Pakistan government who have been ostracized by their people over the support for the war be? The Pakistani government was obviously trying to get its hands on a few political cards by going against its peoples wishes by supporting the war. Pakistan nearly erupted into civil war at the time. How will Pakistan react when, not only are all her cards taken away, she is pulled away from the card game all together?

India exists as a subsidiary entity to Microsoft Corp.

We could help Musharraf annihilate the extremists in his country, but the collateral damage involved would likely lessen our moral image even further.

India would love us for it though.

Well, actually, it is consistent with our other allies....

Pakistan - ally in War on Terror despite being a harborer of terror itself

China - most favored trade nation despite human rights abuses far beyond even India

There are a few others, but you get the idea.  Still, I think India is important as an ally.
