In light of recent events.... how longer do you think we Americans will hold out in Iraq?  There's been a lot of discussions about what will happen if/when we do....

So, what do you think?

(On a related note, the book "State of Denial" by Bob Woodward is quite a good read... check it out if you're interested in this stuff)

2 years.

On a similar note, I just started 'Take Back the Right' by Philip Gold, who (apparently) is a leading 'conservative'. Good read.

Whether it will be "large scale" as you defined it or not is highly questionable. Political opinion in the US dictates that it will be popular to bring back as many troops as soon as possible, and therefore we're definitely on the far side of the bell curve relating to troop numbers.

Unfortunately for those who would like to see US troops out of Iraq in the short term, I think large-scale (around 10,000) troops will continue in Iraq for at least a decade, just have a look at the size of the embassy being built as evidence of commitment. The United States has a history of leaving significant bases, and therefore troop numbers, in countries they have occupied: Germany, Japan. It would be naive to expect anything different in Iraq. You have to remember that having such a base, though unpopular with many in the Muslim world, gives them combat ability to stage into Iran, Syria etc. Much preferable to having to move from a carrier in the gulf, even with the additional secuirty threat.

Can? Indefinitely. Will would be the better term.

As for Woodward's books, 'Forrest Gump' has more direction.

Took the Brits 35 years to get out of N.Ireland and they only came in for a few months originally... your country is gonna be stuck in the quagmire that is the middle east for more than a few years. took the Russians 15 years to get out of Afghanistan.. the Middle East trouble is only starting..

"Shock and Awe" didn't fail. The military opted to go with a combined troop invasion and missile attack instead of just an all out missile attack with the troop invasion coming second. If we tried to flatten Baghdad, we would have.

Depends how long it takes us to set up another puppet government. And even then we will never withdraw permenantly, we will have troops stationed in Iraq and Afganhistan for a long time now.

iraqi/american intermin government reports Iraqis should be able to handle their own policing/law enforcement by June 2007. I don't think large scale offensive troops will be kept until the next Presidential election; Democrats seen keen on removing US forces. I hope 'we' stay there until the job is done. Done is decided by the military, not some fatass bureaucrat sitting safely in a desk a thousand miles away, nor by some nosy, retarded journalist off to save the world from the "terrible despot Bush."

Um, no. The US can occupy a country indefinitely until our military is broken outright. The more likely scenario is still whether or not we will stay.

Not if you use a nuke.  Of course, I'm not suggesting we do that.

Whatever the case, I voted 30 months, because I think we will withdraw somewhere between 2 and 3 years from now.  Bush will have to decide whether he wants to withdraw before the next election or let the next president do it.  It all depends on how they can spin things....

The situation could become something where withdrawal could be spun to suggest that the mission has been accomplished, or...  it could be spun to suggest that staying in Iraq is better, in order to finish the job.

Either way, it's all about propaganda and spin.  If it is done successfully, you can convince people of just about anything.
