How long do you wait? It takes a long time.

How fast is your computer?  You may have to wait longer.  I was working on my wife's computer at the same time as I installed SF so I don't know exactly how long it took.  I have a decently fast computer but it still took a while.

na i have 1 lower end system I installed it installed on and its just a sempron 1.67 ghz with 768 mb ram it only to 10 mins to patch. follow the instructions in the back of the book to close background tasks, un install then reinstall.

Disable security software while ur installing.

Just re-installed everything, includung windows, due to brain fart...

Installing SF the program the 1.1 patch to BF2 took about 8 minutes. That was 1 minute of preparing, 30 seconds of activity and 6.5 minutes of patching. This was on a P4/3000.

When SF came out IIRC some people were having install problems due to previous installation of 1.12 patch. Some were reccomending a compete uninstall then install BF2, SF and 1.12 patch. Don't forget, after installing SF you need to install the latest patch again, 1.12.

Just a quickie reply.... there is a problem on how we patch so EA UK gave a definitive response o how to do it.... It worked for me, but there's no guarantee it'll work for everyone (obviously).  More info > http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=6275

Ok I'm having the same problem, I got BF2:SF for Christmas(via internet and dl) and I downloaded the EA downloader and when I try to install the game it has to patch v1.1 and about 10-15 sec passes then it says patching failed. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the original BF2 two times and it still doesn't work. I really need help because this is frustrating enough to make me not want to play it. So I really need some help.

What I did, was install BF2, then patch 1.12, then BF2:SF and then again patch 1.12.
Worked fine for me.

Some guys have done BF2, then BF2:SF and then patch 1.12.
Installing the patch took a long time.

From what I've read this is not just my problem it is several peoples problem. So EA/Dice will probably either find some way to fix it or have us print the recept, go to a store and, get a hard copy of it. But idk

It does not depend so much how FAST your CPU is or how much RAM you have. The only component that counts the most is HARD DISK.

If you have fragmented HD you will get problems. If the partition is too small, you will have problems. Plus about 10 more things that count.

For example if you have less than 20% free space on partition, AFTER you have installed all possible and needed software, Win XP will loose control pretty quickly.
No matter how fast your hardware could be or how much you have this or that inside your PC.

I know this very well because I "tested" the installation in every possible way and beyond. The game will istall ok IF your hardware is ok.

I just installed BF2 on this computer yesterday, and I got Patch 1.12 for it off the EA Website. It just keeps on saying "patching" and I don't know what to do.

Note: I don't have SF or I haven't gotten any of the previous patches before 1.12. Do I need to install them before I install 1.12 itself?

I'm wondering if un-installing then re-installing the EA Downloader might help. Any thoughts, cause i dont care if i have to buy it again cause if that doesn't work I am probably gonna go to a Wall Mart and get a hard copy.

Aha! Got it installed. I got all the patches and did them in order. Patching took less than 30secs, even for 1.12

melchorsbrother, im having the exact same problem.

Every patch for BF2 I have had to install i have done manually, but it worked

Now Special forces tries to patch and i get the patching failed error, and installing manually doesnt help because the special forces installer still doesnt think it is patched. I have tried just about everything. I've just emailed EA, and told them I dont want any replies saying "end backround tasks". Im not that stupid, thats the first thing I tried

If I get it working, I will post back here saying how.

Until then, I agree....

SOOOO lame

surprisingly, this worked:

*Reply from EA*

Hello,

Sometimes this can be resolved with a fresh Windows Admin account. If you would like to make a new Administrator account, you can do this in the User Accounts interface.

Click on the Start button.
Click on Control Panel.
Locate the small Control Panel sub-window at the top left of the window.
If it says Switch to Category View, you are in the correct viewing mode.
If it says Switch to Classic View, click on the text to switch to the correct view.
Double-click on the User Accounts icon.
Click on the Add button.
Choose a user name and password.
Make sure to give the account full Administrator abilities.
Once the account is created, you will be able to restart and log in with the new Administrator account.

If you cannot allow a user access to an Administrator account to run the game, there is a feature in Windows XP that allows you to choose to run a certain program as if it had Administrator abilities. This is the Run As option. This option may not work perfectly, but typically it will allow the game to run in a limited account. Also, you will have to complete these steps each time the game is run in order to give it permission to run with Administrator abilities.

Locate the icon for running the game. This may be located on the desktop, or in the Start Menu.
Right-click on the game icon and choose Run As.
Click in the bubble next to “The following user:”
In the User Name box, choose the Administrator account.
Type the password for the Administrator account in the Password box.
Click OK.
The program will now launch and run with Administrator capabilities. It will only have these abilities for this instance of the program; these steps must be repeated when the game is started again.

Thank you for your patience.
