Today is the independence day of Finland

Today, 06.12.2006 (or 12.06.2006 American style) it has been precisely 89 years since the 6th December in 1917 when Finland decided to get autonomy from Russia and become an independent country. Russians accepted Finland's request 30th December same year but the sixth day became the official independence day, because if the Russians would've declined, we would've fought for our autonomy. _{(which we actually did in the winter war -39-40)}

You might be asking why the heck did I post this here? Well, why not.
There are many Finnish guys in these forums, and it doesn't hurt you either to know something about this "cold land in the north"

Now I'm requesting TWO things:

1. Request to all members: Tell me/us what you know about Finland. I'd like to know what you PPL know about my/our country.

2. Request to Finnish members: Write here and I will make a list of Finnish users.

Well I am a big fan of global affairs and I've been to Helsinki for a holiday so:

Finland was once subject to the Swedish rule, hence the reason all street signs are in both Swedish and Finnish (which is a disgrace - it should just be Finnish; Helsinki is also known as Helsingfors for example). They were also subject to Russian domination which as you said they managed to free themselves from.

The Finnish language is a Magyar langauge - its closest relative being Hungarian (it's very strange, lots of k's!!).

The North of Finland is host to Samiis (or something, forget the exact name) - native Lappish people, I think they may have their own language even.

Finland is home to Nokia - the best mobile phone company in the world.

Helsinki is home to some spectacular buildings (they're in my 'Best Photos' thread) - Tuomiokirrkio, Upsenski Cathedral and Kiasma, etc.

The overnight Silja line ferry from Stockholm to Ahland to Helsinki is BRILLIANT FUN.

Sibelius, the composer, was Finnish and he has a cool memorial in a Helsinki park.

The Finns had a very effective and tough ski-bound army that fended off the Russians in WWII.

Suomenlinna, an old fortress island guarding Helsinki, is a UNESCO world heritage site.

Nightime in Finland, during the summer, is practically non-existent.

From what I could see there are a lot of goths in Finland and metal music seems to be popular!

No, it shouldn't just be Finnish. Finland is a bilingual country. Approx. 6-7% of the population are Swedish speaking. Towns and cities with a bilingual population have the street signs etc. in two languages. When in a place with a larger percentage Fennoswedes than Finnish speaking, the Swedish name comes first in the street sign. Public schooling is arranged in two languages also, e.g. I have gone through Swedish speaking schools the whole nine yards to my BBA in Marketing Communications. Social services, well, the whole enchillada is arranged in two languages, if necessary.

So, it's not a disgrace. Maybe a relic from the Swedish reign, but a cultural heritage nonetheless.

Besides, many of our founding fathers and freedom fighters (e.g C.G.E. Mannerheim) were Swedish speaking Finns.

My wife is from the town of Tammela, also known as 'Hackapel county'.

They stage a re-enacment of the Hackapel conscriptions every summer. Never been to the event myself, but my mother-in-law keeps telling me I should go.

Regarding Vodkas, Koskenkorva > Finlandia. Usually Vodkas need to be chilled to be any good, but Koskenkorva is quite enjoyable even in room temp, straight from the bottle. Which is the traditional way...

I know very little about Finland. I do know that Father Christmas lives there and I think Suomi is the Finnish language, but I could be wrong.

As well as rally drivers, there have been a few F1 drivers from Finland: Mika Hakkinnen, Mika Salo and one other, whose name I can't quite remember.

The "ä" letters are written as "a" because many countries don't use Ä, or Ö letters.
