http://forums.bf2s.com/viewtopic.php?id=55324 - my shortest closed thread ever - and I'm not even sure why...

OK, maybe I better explain...

It wasn't actually intended to be a thread about 'russj123', per se - I thought some people might have twigged what I was on about and then started a discussion about 'The wierd world of internet forums'...

OK, having said this isn't about you (if you're reading this), russ, I hope you don't mind if I use you as an 'case study' of sorts... I know I'll change the names... :p

Right, the case of dobbi678:

dobbi678 appears to be quite a new member on these forums (though I haven't checked his join date, so I don't know how new) and has, to my knowledge, started at least two threads in the help sections of these forums asking for opinions on a couple of different subjects. Then, just as opinions start coming in the threads disappear. Now this must be due to one of two things - either dobbi678 didn't like the responses he was getting or some moderator has it 'in' for dobbi678 and is deleting his threads as quickly as possible.

Now, I'm sure the later isn't the case. The mods here all seem pretty decent in my experience.

But, I also can't see how dobbi678 could have got offended by the help he was getting (after some obvious, almost mandatory, punnage (admitedly from me in particular)).

So, here's the question(s):

What is it about internet forums that make people behave and respond differently than they would in any 'real-life' social situation?

Jokes and puns are good example, in real-life they're common within human social interactions and act to 'break the ice', but online, those same jokes and puns, seem to have completely the opposite effect.

Why is this?

Thinking this over also brought the concept of the 'monkeysphere' to mind - is and how is our 'monkeysphere' changed by the 'barrier' of PC-internet-PC between us and our online-social group?

How many of us, as I do, consider the posters (even those we lock horns with) on these forums as inside their 'monkeysphere' whilst they're actively reading/posting, but outside once the browser windows been closed, or they've surfed on?

Discuss...

Yeah, likewise - that why I said I consider everyone to be within my 'monkeysphere' when I'm posting - I respond as I would if I was with a group of friends and associates.

I vote the anonymity to be the reason.

Anonymity explains flaming. It doesn't explain why 'ice breakers' don't work.

Well, I didn't read all the questions. I only answered to # 1. Sorry.

Just a side note here...  Thanks for the "monkeysphere" link, scorpion.  It basically is a simplified explanation of Ayn Rand's "Objectivism" idea.

As for the answer to your question...  I could see how anonymity might help us to be more friendly to each other.  Those of us that are introverted are less likely to walk up to a stranger and say "hi", but doing so on the internet is very simple and really doesn't have much of an awkwardness to it.

Perhaps, the limitations of net speech are that there is no tone of voice to judge responses by.  We often take for granted this subtlety of speech in real life.  Therefore, perhaps, this guy didn't understand that your tone was not serious.

Ah, yes, 'not reading the whole of the post' syndrome is probably part of it too...

Ah, yes, and this could go some way to explain why 'ice breakers' often fail - because the anonimty has already broken that barrier, so the ice breaker comes across as a 'dig', maybe?

Sometimes it is hard to express the right words and thoughts in words.  Some times what you say can be taken the "wrong" way.  Think about how hard it is sometimes to get sarcasm across on the interwebs.  Same thing.

I must admit, sometimes on the forums, often in-game where i think its NOT the right place to chat with someone, Hard past times made me someone who prefer to be with 3-4 friends rather then clubbing or raving. I would not say im a loner, i got some friends at least, but yes it can be easier to "type" what i think but most of time, i doing it respecfully and without crap talk like "my penis is bigger then yours" or " i own you".

A few possible answers

1, Personnally I don't meet someone in RL and start making puns I usually wait a while to try and see if that
person has a similar sense of humor and is the sort of person who would respond/find amusing puns.
So maybe he has no sense of humor.

2, Half the so called "ice Breaker" puns are not puns but people being sarcastic twats who think they are special or in geekl speak L33t, puts people off posting.

3, On this forum Karma - to many people trying to be funny etc to get karma rather than answering a simple question.

I agree to a point.  I prefer hanging out with 3-4 friends, but I often do that while at a rave.  It seems funny, but it's like people still gather in cliques while at parties.  Granted, the atmosphere at a rave is still more open than on the street, usually....
