No you didn't kill one of the cores because the whole processor would stop working altogether. Its a problem with your motherboard. You might have to update the bios in the board because some boards were not built with support for dual core processors.

lol

in task manager click view > cpu history > one graph per cpu

As for your hardware - check system info to see if its detecting it

if not it must be a bios issue

You need to get a DOS boot disk. I know a site where you can get one.

In the bios I think you can choose whether it use both or both as one.

That hidden message is "This core will be held hostage until payment is received behind the hot water pipes at the train station"

He could probably do it himself for free.

He could also void the warrenty(If its a pre-built computer) and screw himself if a real problem came to be.

This is because NForce4 does NOT support the intel 820 chip.

I had a P5ND2-SLI Deluxe board with the 820 and also only had one core show up.

Nvidia thought "if youre buying a high end board, you shouldnt buy a low end chip" so they didnt put in full support for that chip.

Youll either need to run it at one core, get a different chip (830 works, 920 works, 805 works (for some dumb reason)) or my favorite, ditch that POS board and get something thats not based on an Nvidia chipset..     that board was HORRIBLE..

Heres one article on it.

Well that is odd because I'm running a dual core processor on an Asus P5N32 motherboard and its an nForce4 board.

The exact wording is

" A Disk Read Error Occured Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to Restart"

i found the solution on some overclocker site and they said it was the sound card drivers messing with it, i tried it and it worked, i had to change the folder name in regdeit to put an "a" in front of it but i forgot to change it back after i flashed the bios. so im thinking thats it. i would just throw in the xp disc but i dont have the xp disc handy. so i got a feeling im sol until i get it.
