Go to options and move the sound slider to the side so you can hear nothing. When you're done move it back. That's what I do at least.

I don't now if it works in menu, but if you use this bind you can switch between sound on and off:
bind [anykey] "toggle snd_volume"

what i do is just go into my sound settings and set all the volumes to 0. than when i want it back up again just click reset to default. works well if your playing with music on as well.

When I minimize CoD4 (normally to eat and watch TV)- I simply go into the Options // Sound menu and turn down the game-volume. Haven't found an effective way of just turning off the menu music.
