HD 3870 X2

Overclockers.co.uk wrote:

Advance to ultimate HD gaming with incredible performance, life-like graphics and support for Microsoft® DirectX® 10.1. With dual ATI Radeon™ HD 3870 GPUs working in exquisite precision, you’re ready to dominate the battlefield from over one teraFLOPS of GPU compute power. And thanks to plug-and-play ATI CrossFireX™ upgradeability, you can scale your performance to even greater heights. ATI PowerPlay™ technology first used in ATI Mobility Radeon™ notebook GPUs has been built into the ATI Radeon™ 3800 Series GPU. This exciting break-through technology delivers further on AMD’s commitment to reducing the energy consumption in computing technologies. The technology is designed to enable power saving profiles that help reduce power consumption when the GPU is idle or in minimal use in comparison to previous products. This dynamic power management enables the GPU to automatically adjust power between low, medium and high states. It can alter the engine and memory clocks, as well as the voltages based on the software application’s activity level.

Holy crap, that does look big. Any benchmarks yet to compare with the 8800 Ultra/Gtx?

I'm willing to imagine that the 8800 Ultra, for all that it's been out forever (in computing terms), still outbenches ATI.

[edit]
Tom's Hardware Video Charts; BF2142, Max Test Settings:

NV 8800 Ultra (G80) 62.3FPS
NV 8800 GT (G92) 57.2FPS
ATI 3870 (RV670) 33.0FPS (and I don't think the X2 will help much; as it is, NV is already bumping out a twin)[/edit]

no it doesn't... google the benchies... there are lots of them... and I must agree that it beats Ultra...

I just found some on Tom's Hardware. It beats the Ultra by a small margin in 1680x1050 on Crysis and World in Conflict, but when AA and AF are turned on, the Ultra, G92 GTS and GTX beat it.

So basically if you plan on using AA or AF, the 8800 series is a better choice. Plus, the 9800 GX2's come out next month. I'm sure these will smoke the 3870's. They're good cards, don't get me wrong...but it seems as of late, nVidia's always one step ahead.

Compare the prices of the X2 and Ultra.
Irrelevant. The 6800 Ultra was super-expensive for a long time, and is still somehow eBaying for over $100.

Instead, compare the prices of the X2 and the G92 8800GT.

Well glad AMD has brought some competition back to the market place. Good for us as prices will continue to drop on both sides

Unless AMD/ATI has a thuper-therial thurprize in store, the enthusiast market will remain firmly in the grasp of Intel/NVIDIA, despite certain quarrels, and you will still be making choices about whether to buy bars of gold or computer chips.

Wait what?

The X2 beats Ultra and is £80 cheaper. How is that irrelevant?

If you actually LOOK and read the specifications and prices, its better value wise and spec wise to get two HIS ATI Radeon HD 3870 XT ICEQ3 TURBO 512MB GDDR4.

I'm confident 2 8800GT in SLi would beat it.

8800 Ultra = ~$630 USD and is oldish
8800GTX = ~$400 USD and is oldish
8800GT (G92) = ~$300 USD and is less-than-oldish
3870X2 = ~$600 USD and is supposedly the latest and greatest, strutting into the ring to proclaim some kind of victory like you'd sit up in the middle of the night with a perfect comeback to being snubbed earlier that afternoon

That image is inconclusive. It could be measuring bitmap rendering for all I know.

===

I'd like to see ATI step up and drive toe-to-toe against NVIDIA once more (and reap the pricing), but this isn't it. It's more like chin-to-knee.
