I remember reading somewhere it was the 7900...GTX?  Or the 7950GT2 or whatever it is?

Because a friend of mine is building a comp, but with no interest in DX10/Vista.

DX10 cards will still run DX9 games better. For example, 8800GT will run any game significantly better than a 7900GT.

Price. And they tend to eat more power.

...........

Tell him to get an 8800GT and run his dx9 in full settings.  Just because its a dx10 card doesnt mean he has to run it like that.

Besides, I think the best dx9 card was the ATI X1950XTX and, I havent seen any for sale in a long time.

An 8800GT would probably be cheaper than either any of the high end dx9 cards that are still going about, and superior.

Yeah, it's price that's the issue here.  Otherwise I would definitely say go with the 8800GT.   He's a little broke, if you catch my drift.

But there is a good chance even a lower end 8 series will run better than a higher end last gen card.

Okay...if I'm right, these comparisons should be correct.

7600GT is around equal to a 8600GT
7800GS is around equal to a 8600GTS?

Because before I bought my video card (a 8600GTS), people were speculating that it would perform as a 7900GT does.  As an owner of the actual card itself, I can say that it definitely does NOT perform as well as they said it would.

What would be the best price/performance card for him if he wants to run CoD 4 with a >40 FPS framerate @ 1280x1024 on Medium settings?  Because my card runs it just like that.

8800GTs are out of the question; too expensive for him.

Probably an 8600GT with as much memory as you can get.

8600 loses to x19xx's, to 7900's, and in some benchmarks even to 7600GT

is what he's planning on getting.

Edit: Bonus question - What DX9 card does my 8600GTS compare to?  (ATI and Nvidia)  Just wondering.

I said X1950XTX, thought, don't seem to find any benchmarks for it (all dx10 cards).

I was going to base an argument for getting a 8800GT on UK pricing, but after looking at newegg, there seems to be a much steeper price difference between a good dx9 and an 8800GT.

How much does he have to spend anyways?

Martyn

Depressing.  Multiplayer?

I gotta try running it on all high with my card...

Edit: The X1950 seems like a pretty good card for the price...

Edit2: Nvm, apparently I play on high already.

Regardless, if you go by UK pricing, a high end dx9 is, what, £100ish?  An X1950pro is, for an XT your looking at some sort of permium of £20.  You can pick up a stock clocked 8800GT for £150.  Granted a bit more expensive but it's hardly double (maybe it's more steep elsewhere?) and is a hell of a lot faster.

Martyn
Right here Cheapest Radeon x1950GT goes for 98€, pro for 140€, can't find any XT's atm

Some suspicious 8800GT's go for a tad over 200€, but mainly at around 250€

You will save money in the long term.
