I found out a while ago that the only reason that deleted files are very easily recovered is because of the FBI and the sort.

They have made it compulsory that only 5 parts per file are actually physically deleted when you click that "delete" button.

Which, basically, means that only the file name gets deleted from Windows explorer and any other "public explorer".
So, if you get a computer nerd with a program that can undo that file name deletion, then voila - all your files are visible again.

How nice.

Worst comes to worst, mag sweep your hard drive. Even a nerd can't replace a magnetic field.

That's why most major corporations incinerate their old hard drives.  Some "geeks" can even recover data from HD's smashed with a hammer.

Your correct, when something gets deleted it isn't technicaly deleted, its stored in a spot in Windows that will be overwritten eventually. Say you have 5gb of info, and you delete a 1gb file, then you fill your harddrive with 100gb of new information, chances are its been overwritten.

The FBI can also recover information from reformatted drives, if you arent carefull. Thats why i use a program call KillDisk and i let it run this few hour scan to remove and scramble the harddrive before putting Windows on again.

Plus, this is just common knowledge, the truth is who knows what kind of crazy shit the FBI has at there workshop.

When you do a quick reformat aswell, it just overwirtes the files as you save new info to the disk.

well, you just delete the pointer to the start of the file, then it remains till you overwrite that part of the hard disk by something else.

So deleting is more: enabling to overwrite instead of removing every single bit of it.

edit: btw, it's not for fbi, it's just logic, otherwise if you have to replace all data bits by random bits deleting would take ages.
and formatting isn't getting rid of all data on your disk either, you have to get a magnetic field, or a program that writes random bits on your hard disk.

True. But if you have private data that you want deleted - bills, bank details, passwords - then it's worse.

I have my personal details encrypted with 256-bit blowfish ( yes, I don't trust people as much as I would like ) and then shred them with a DoD 22-m shredder.

Yah, i know taht

there is a program called CCleaner  it can overwrite your data that you want deleted 1, 3, or 7 times

the same people make a program called recuva, which can find the"Deleted" files, and you can recover them... however if you overwrite with CCleaner you can recover the file, but however  none of the data(filename, contents) are correct.

Yes, but what happens when you have a huge HDD ( like me ) and those files never get overwritten.

To delete files permanently you have to overwrite them with non-microsoft program. I use Spybot S&D (which is actually a Spyware removal program with bunch of tools)

Or reformat using a formatting program. Not windows' program again.

You do know that unless stated the programs you use are still abiding by the 5 parts per file deletion?
So basically - you are not deleting the files. It's law for programs, unless stated, only delete 5 parts per file.

Isn't there that WinUnDelete program which you can use to un-delete stuff.

And reformatting doesn't necessarily work as the FBI and such like can go back through the "layers" on your HD.

Edit: Found it: http://www.winundelete.com/

Hmm my 1 karma seemes to get me ignored...

CCleaner overwrites  files, it makes the head of the HDD pass over the file with a charge on it, thus F-in up the data...
FYI its free...

www.invisiblesecrets.com???

I can hide files in pictures too, all i need is a pic, winrar/7zip, and command.com(command prompt) and a keyboard/ maybe windows, a computer may help

Why do you think you have been ignored. I acknowledged your post. I just never had an answer back to it because I know it's true. I just use a more secure way of shredding my files.

electron microscope... you know what that is, right...
if you do know that than you must not know how data is stored on a HD...

It didn't. Known it for a while. Just thought I should post it up to see the discussion about it. Also, lots of people don't know.
