Wow. People here really just can't listen to one another, can they.

For the few that can, you know who you are, well done on contributing to something that could have been enlightening for so many users on this forum. However it has just descended into a bickering "My country is better than yours, and you can go jam it where the sun doesn't shine" kind of scrap with no end in sight.

I stand firm in the knowledge that the few do not represent the majority in my views on the worlds peoples, and that I hope that those misguided few can perhaps open their minds to knowledge and empathy.

So if you wanted to know why people are 'Bashing America' on this forum, perhaps this thread is a shining example, thanks to a few bad eggs (There's enough of them here to start a whole new thread on bashing the UK, bashing Europe and bashing Australia too unfortunately).

The ignorance and plain lack of knowledge that has been displayed is just amazing.

On the few topics that hit close to home for me;

I think I saw before someone stating that the head of state of Australia is the Queen of England... while that technically is true, the Governor General (who is an Australian) carries out her 'duties' in Australia. I think the last time a member of the Royal Family visited here (Prince Charles?) they let him stand in Parliament and feel a bit special but it's just a bad tendency in our country to hang on to an age gone by.
If we had waited on our referendum for becomimg a Republic by a few years (by letting a generation or two of voters actually come of age and be allowed to vote) things would be different i'm sure.
"God Save the Queen" is not our national anthem, and hasn't been for some time.

Another thing, someone even went as far as to link to a thread on the upcoming Australian Election, the response by one of our American users was something like "I don't know about the politics in Europe".

Please stop confusing us with Europe. We are part of South-East Asia.

Please stop confusing us with a 'colony' of England. We are, and have been for a long time, our own country, even if we do hang on to some old traditions and formalities that are the rose-tinted memory of an ageing population.

There have been some really good posts but since I last posted (about fifteen hours ago) the kids have come out to play and this is what we've got.

I am keen to hear more views on this but if I come back this afternoon and things have just contined (wouldn't be surprised if my post isn't even read) as they are, I won't bother posting here anymore.

And I don't mean in this thread, I mean in this forum.

Just the same as america, yet if you are a believer of most american news sources, they are murdering terrorists that all deserve to be shot or locked up. Some of you buy into it, just like some of them buy into foolish extremist ideals.

Some of you mentioned jealousy as a reason before, i believe this to be untrue. There are about five countries i can name from the top of my head with better living, working and social conditions than the USA.

Sure the usa has given us some great inventions, but not all of them. Greece, England, Rome, Egypt, Even Australia can also claim to great inventions. What people see is americans flouting their successes as if only they could have built the wheel (for example) whilst completley demeaning and ignoring (sometimes even expressing horror) the fact that other nations also invent things. Which is why some mumblings against the states can be percieved as jealousy, it is not. please do not assume it is.

The truth is people, americans are no different that anyone else, they have good people and they have bad people and they have misguided people. Just like England/Iran/Russia/China/Australia. As open minded people, do not tar them all with the same brush the good people are worthy of our praise and friendship, just as their bad are worthy of the same scorn we deem appropriate for "terrorists." To lump every american in the same pot makes you no better than the americans who do the same to muslims, in critisising them, you contradict your own argument and critisise yourself.

Sad to say, the americans i've met on vacation have been arrogant and acting like complete jerks, but i hope i just had the misfortune of meeting rotten apples.

I agree.  You will find that most non-American DST regulars don't hate America, and in fact we like it.  Many of us criticize GWB, and that's considered anti-American.  It's a real shame, coz criticizing GWB is being fair to America.  America has a great history of good presidents, and sadly this one is an insult to that history IMO.

Firstly I feel I have to say I'm not anti america at all and I know some americans.
But I think you're blinded by your own politics. Americans are at first europeans (english, french, italian, germans etc). Europe was considered as the most developped area for centuries and was still in the 20th centuries (till WW1). French and germans were the best chemists, they created and discovered alotta stuff, more than you could even think. during the WW1 US helped the french and brits at the end of the war but europeans would have defeated germans without US help. Wanna others example ? (Einstein was not american but was a german jewish btw)
But during the WW2, well anyway Stalin would have kicked Hitler's ass, but I do thank US for saving us. I wouldn't have liked to be saved by russians and their utopian communist. BTW french kicked the king since 1789, USA had just been created. King there were after 1789 in france had no power at all actually. (I don't know really bout brits though)

The computer was invented by a Brit, Babbage. The British also pioneered a number of the most important early electronic computers, such as Colossus. The Internet was created by the US (DARPA), but it was not in the form we know today, that was created by a Brit too, Tim Berners Lee.

Who would've made it to the moon? Probably the Russians. Although there are a few European countries whose rocket building expertise leads me to believe they would be quite capable of doing it - France with Arianne and Britain with Blue Streak (not neccessarily using those particular rockets). The modern car was invented in Germany. It was predominantly foreign scientists liberated from Nazi Europe who developed the nuke. Europe was democratic before the US, about 3000 years before. More medical breakthroughs have come from Europe than the US and the top 10 pharmaceutical companies are split evenly between Europe and the US, 5 in each.

Do typical Americans really believe all this sort of nonsense?
