Do you golf? If so, please post any tips or advice you have for a new player.  I just played for the first time on a par 3 course and didn't do too bad.  This game is addicting.

So far I've heard:

Keep your feet shoulder width apart.

Line your front foot up with the ball when you want to hit farther.

Line your back foot up with the ball when you want to get more height and drop it in closer.

The shorter the distance, the higher the club number.

You don't have to swing out of your shoes to hit the ball a long distance.

Bend your knees.

And the best so far: Keep your head down!

My dad plays, but i get too frustrated if the ball doesnt go where i want it to go.....so i jus end up hitting it as hard as i can in aggrevation thus leading to ball goin somewhere totally random or a huge chunk of grass being sent a few feet. So no, i dnt play golf.

Mini/crazy golf is sometimes fun.

Bend your knees.

I used to go to the driving range, just hit the balls at the tractor that drives across scooping up balls. Got it alot, made a nice clang noise.

i love to golf, im not that good usually around 49 to 54 on 9 holes, my best round ever was a 40 and i still dont know how the hell i did that!!   i have three tips for you, practice, practice and practice.  just hit at a driving range and get a feel for what each club can do, pay attention to the ppl who can put the ball where they want at the driving range.  the driver is the hardest club to hit, so dont be embarrassed if you hit it like shit, i still hit it like shit, use a 3 wood instead, i can crush my 3 wood on average about 285 - 300 yards.  it just takes a bunch of practice.  maybe youll get lucky and get a free lesson from a club pro like i did.  he spent about 1 1/2 hrs helping me develop a descent swing, and he did it for free, it was cool.

i'd add 'Learn to swing every club at the same tempo'. to be consistent, you have to have a swing you can rely on. as my college golf coach said, "it's like using your 9 iron swing on your driver". not ball placement,
but the actual rythem of the swing.

have fun learning how to shape the balls' flight, and work on your short game first.

I play minigolf
once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

I'm not bad, play off 13.

My biggest advice, never EVER move your head at any point during your swing. If you peripheral changes, your swing fuc*s up hard. It's the biggest mistake of all amateurs, and I even still do it. Keep your eyes glued to the ball and don't move that head!

My advice to anyone new to the game is to not try and kill the ball.  In doing this, you will more than likely mess up completely.  Making good contact with the ball will make it go farther than you think and if you have to lay up instead of go for the green, so be it.  It's better to have to hit a second shot from the fairway than to hit from the woods or sand trap.

Don't crush the ball, I had this  problem and my ball would go like 30 yards, but then I toned down and slowed my pace and can now hit the ball right and it goes far. Also keep your head a fists of the chest, not just down but a fist. Every shot begins behind the ball and find an intermediate target to aim at close to you. Keep your hands together. Learn the rules of the game and don't feel rushed, it's a slower paced game.

I used to play all the time.  Everyday when I was in high school.  Now, maybe a few times a year if I'm lucky.

All those tips above are good, but as a beginner, just remember to relax and try to hit the ball the same tempo/strength every time.  As you get better and more comfortable swinging a club, you can fine tune your swing.

The biggest tips I can offer are -
Have fun
Be extremely patient
Make sure you stock up on at least a 12 pack.

Don't play now, but have played when I was younger.

As for tips: hit the ball towards the green.

I'm a big hitter. With my R580 9.5 degree, I can hit the ball 315 in the air off the tee. My tips to hit the long ball:

[*]Stand in as wide a stance as you can.
[*]Let your shoulders, arms, and neck relax.
[*]Lift your head so your chin is pointing outward, yet you are still able to see the ball.
[*]Draw your club back slowly, lock yourself into your set position.
[*]Shift your weight foreward. Once the club passes the parallel line with the ground, give it all you got.
[*]Follow through strong, but controlled.

lol.

I wouldn't really say I play golf, more like I play at golf. I usually only get one or two rounds in a year, so I pretty much suck, though I did break 100 on 18 holes once.

I can pick up a full set of clubs (6 years old) with a club bag for $50.  Not sure what brand.  I was thinking of going to a local used sports equipment shop to find some clubs, but I know the guy that's selling these.  He's an avid golfer so I don't think he'd abuse his clubs.

Should I go for this set or buy a new set of cheap clubs?

That is extremely cheap for a set of clubs, seeing as new drivers go for hundreds of dollars.  At this point I would say get the used ones, then if you find you like playing a few months down the road, slowly build up your club set.  You don't have to go out and spend a bunch of money at once, in fact you may find that you like the feel of the old set more than you would brand new (or newish) clubs.
