Basically, I want to upgrade my computer from the low-end rubbish 1gb of RAM I have now, to something better. Alot better. So I can finally run BF2 on it's highest settings. Basically, I want this:

Corsair 2GB DDR XMS3200C2PT TwinX (2x1GB) CAS2 (MY-079-CS)  (Fourth one down..)

I want that x2. 4GB of RAM. But is my system compatible with this? Can I actually use it?

My system specs at the moment (Excluding current RAM) is:

ASUS A8N-SLi Motherboard
GeForce 7800GTX
AMD Athlon 64 4000+

corsair quality is prolly close to the best if nto the best. really any corsair xms ram will work in any mobo. i have never heard that corsair xms ram didnt work in any asus, dfi, abit, gigabyte mobo. if you really want to make sure read the book that came with your mobo. it will tell you what ram types work.

Read my post and experiences with Corsair and that mobo here.
I have since added 2G of the OCZ RAM and it works perfect.

Your MB Specs:
- 4 x 184-pin DIMM Sockets support max. 4GB DDR400/DDR333/DDR266 ECC/ non-ECC un-buffered DDR SDRAM memory
- Dual Channel Memory Architecture

Corsair Specs:
(DDR400)
The TWINX2048-3200C2 is a pair of 1024 MByte DDR SDRAM DIMMs

So yes it will work

I was able to run on all the highest settings afetr getting only ONE GB of ram (and a Radeon x850 PRO).

That is until I applied the latest Patch v. 1.1.2254.356.0    :-(

just FYI, Windows has a hard time recognizing more than 2.5GB of RAM from what I've heard.  Also, I've heard that 2GB is the sweet spot for BF2.

god I wish I had more than 512MB of RAM...

sorry windows can rec. as much ram as you can put in.....thats xp of course.

No doubt that you can use it... but 4gb is totally unnecessary. You won't see a difference from 2 to 4. Just wasted money.

mind that brother - you can install RAM chips straight out of the uss Enterprise computer core. it will still run the same speed as your "low-end rubbish 1gb of RAM" does. This is how it works.

I hope your low end mem is DDR400. if its even lower then that - the total 2GB installed *WILL* run at the lower clock speed.

oh, and

this is not true. Windows xp x32 is limited to 4GB of ram. The year old new Windows xp x64 can support upto 16TB
(Terra = 1giga of a giga).

Let me try to clear a few things up.

First, I doubt the USS enterprise uses the same DDR ram that your computer does , but not all ram is created equal.  While his "regular" DDR400 currently works, there are certainly faster ones out there.  The RAM that he has picked out has timings of 2-3-3-6 (lower is better).  His current RAM is most likely standard ram, which runs at a speed of generally 3-4-4-8.  You can actually get ram that runs at 2-2-2-5 but now you're digging in your wallet.  If you get that new ram, and 2 gigs of it to boot, not only will your computer run WAY faster, but it will actually run cooler than before (I have seen this first hand on my PC when I first got Corsair memory with enhanced timings, my ambient temp dropped 10 celsius).

Non nerd lingo: You can run in fuzzy pink bunny slippers, but you can definitely run faster with cross trainer Adidas, and your feet probably won't hurt as much.

32 bit OS is definitely limited to 4GB of ram. However, in personal experience, the last Asus mobo I tried to put 4gb into actually only recognized 3.6GB as a limitation of the BIOS and chipset, not the CPU itself.  But in the end, you are definitely wasting your money on 4GB of ram for this game. You are better off buying 2GB of fast Corsair or OCZ memory (or whatever is your cup of tea), and getting a faster video card with the money from the extra 2gb that the game will not use.  From what the forums here say, BF2 uses between 1 and 1.5gb of memory, and XP will use about 200 idle (depending on all that porn spyware you have loaded). However, judging from the specs you have posted, you are not concerned about budget, so maybe you should get 4gb and a second GTX card for SLI and really pound out those pixels

I would recommend Kingston HyperX RAM, I just installed a second matched pair of 512Kb stick yesterday and now I have 2Gb of RAM.  I use DDR400 2-2-3-6 sticks from MWave.com, they have a $20 rebate right now which put the total cost at about $115 for the gig. No more processor lag in the game now and loading time is about %50 fater. Unfortunately, I still get terrible FPS on some 64 man maps, especially Iron Gator with my ATI 9800Pro. What is the best 8x AGP card now? I am considering upgrading, probably the last upgrade I will be able to do on my system before I have to get a new motherboard/processor. Im running ASUS P4C800 Deluxe with P4 3GHz.

you don't have a fucking clue so don't  act like you do. the manufacturer of the mobo has nothing to do with the ram you can use that is compleatly dpendent on your Chipset.

anyways it will in any athlon 64 motherboard and any pre intel 900 series chipset motherboard...so yes this will work fine for you...but I am guessing what is holding you back is your video card and CPU they are very very good but not the ultimate setup. to play on full settings you pretty much need a 7800GTX 512mb or 2x 7800GTX 256mb with a FX-55 or better.  Dont take that the wrong way though you have a hell of a computer *my 6800gt and Athlon64 3500 bow down in shame*

Ninja6o6 was dead on about the ram and stuff and yes 4gb is totaly useless for gaming

O and the first part of what Absinthe wrote was mostly right, unless you have a clawhammer core in your A64 4000, in which case since you will have 4 double sided ramsticks so it will only run at DDR333 anyways. so if you have the Clawhammer version then buy some corsiar value select and run it at DDr333 at 2-2-2-5 T1.

the part he said about windows xp x32 was wrong though, windows 32-bit can only use 3gbs of ram (of course you would use 4gb anyways for dualchannel) Absinthe heard that 32 bits can only use 4gbs, this is about 32bit memory contollers, so you computer can use 4gb but 1gb of it will never actually effect anything

I just upgraded my PC about a month ago because the long Verifying Client Data was driving me nuts.

I run...

Athlon 64 3200+
Epox MB
2GB G.Skill PC3200 DDR400 Ram (2x1GB)
36.7 GB 10k RPM Raptor (games only)
120 GB (everything else)
GeForce 6800 Ultra

The only issue I had running everything at high detail was I would get one or two lag spikes.  Then up until recently, I started getting CTDs, Blue screens.  When I reinstalled the game, I was getting MD5 errrors.  Turns out, one of my RAM modules went bad, so I have to send both back for an RMA.

i heard too much ram is bad, makes it slower, depends on ur disk cache or something.

Just a hint:

Since Bf2's data management was probably written by a PR manager, it puts horrible amount of work on your HD. Plus the memory leak issue is still active.

Therefore - if you really want to use your 1+ GB RAM - I recommend to set the XP page file to as low as you can.

This way you're not just force BF2 to REALLY use your memory but you lengthen the lifetime of your HD as well.

Thanks for all the info/help

I've gone ahead and bought it....Well, I say 'I'. I mean my mother bought it. So I get it for Christmas. Then I'll buy another 2GB after.

Then I might work on getting that FX-55/57 or better. Although I've heard that that processor runs too hot. And probably another 7800gtx.

But then I'd start worrying about my PSU. Will 550W be sufficient to run another 7800GTX?

Oooh, another question. This has confused me purely because the book that came with my Mobo contradicts itself about it. With those 2 1gb sticks of RAM....where the hell do I put them? There's the black slots, and the blue slots. It says, to always use the blue slots first, but am I right in thinking I put dual channel memory in the first black and blue slots? (Dimm_A1 and Dimm_A2) ??
