UK and Northern Ireland people - you know what I am talking about. Water charges are finally hitting the UK and we all have seen the campaigns to say NO to it! But, what are your views on this?

This needs absolutely no more introduction, I assure you.

Well, as they bloody well should. Incredible that they don't already.

I hail from the People's Socialist Republic of Finland, the land of the thousand potable-water lakes. And we pay for our water....

How much will it cost to use the water?
And why are they doing it? That doesn't make sense. It's not like water is non-renewable. Do they think it's coal?

Look just to clear something up that is very important, here in Northern Ireland we pay things called "Rates" on our houses, part of which has always funded the water service. So what people are objecting to is the fact that Rates have been significantly increased and now water charges on top of that as well.. so in effect we will be paying twice. Not to mention the fact that your water expenses are calculated according to the value of your property, as determined by the government, and nothing to do with how much water is consumed.  It all adds up to a load of Bullshit imo..  we can thank the DUP for our charges as the Assembly could of vetoed them, but not now becuase they refuse to set it up.

The water has never been free. Its been paid in our rates, taxes and council taxes. The government has been to busy spending our money on illegal wars instead of the water and sewage infrastructure and now its at the point of collapse and needs a new form of tax to cover it.

And they still made out at 26% in the polls as far as I believe.

In Montreal we pay for our water (since Last year) to discourage wasteful usage, like old-timer (and no so old-timer) to clean there drive-way with there hose ...etc. And most places on earth nowaday need some water treatment.... wouldn't drink any water from any place around Montreal that wasn't treated of filtered in some way.

So treatment = cost = someone gotta pay. You may say that we already pay trought our city taxes, but here the system his so old in some places that it need an overhaul, and here you have a special water taxes ..... tchi thcing $$$$$$$

And usually those taxes do not apply to private well.

The same here (Montreal, Canada), and  it's cheaper that way, put a meter on your water main, and pay for your real usage. I think you're gonna have a real suprise.

I pay 47 can$ or 20.63 GBP  (30.45 euro) per year , that nothing so i can get clean water whenever i want, without having to walk for miles with a bucket on my head

lmao! you guys don't pay for water??

They don't just suck the water out of the rivers you know, they do have to purify it which does cost money.

Wrong. We do pay for water already. it's all explained further up this thread.

Ahh the joys of having a well.  Pay about $50 a year for the electricity to run the pump and have damn near infinite water that is cleaner than most city water.

Honestly, I wouldn't be bitching about having water rates, I'd be bitching about the old system you have that charges you according to the value of your property rather than how much you use.
