KEWASKUM, Wis. (AP) -- A police chief who ticketed himself for a traffic violation says that he has received congratulatory e-mails from all over the globe and that he has even turned down money to cover the fine.

Chief Dick Knoebel drove past a stopped school bus with its lights flashing in September, then wrote himself a ticket for $235 and docked himself four points on his driving record. The story surfaced after it showed up in court records and media reports.

"Police officers do good things everyday, and that doesn't get reported," said Knoebel, who has been chief for 20 years in this town northwest of Milwaukee. "All you hear about in the news is when a police officer is in trouble."

Knoebel said he got more than 150 e-mails from such places as Thailand, New Zealand and Russia. Two people sent him $15.

"I tried to answer every e-mail," the chief said. "If they took the time to e-mail me, I at least thank them for their comments."

It still amazes me how negative and closed minded most posters are here.

Nice guy. Seems rather unnecessary, but if that's what it takes for us to be able to hear something good about the cops in the news, then I guess it has some point.

You people are just jealous you don't have the moral integrity to do the same...lol

What he did was still wrong, but he got the same punishment as anyone else who would have committed the same offense. Of course it was dumb, that's why it was against the law.

Nobody points out that he's still a dick for driving past a school bus? How do you not see a big ass yellow bus & how do you not think "STOP" when you see the lights on it?

I mean of course that's very noble of him but he still coulda took out a group of kids. I don't think I have ever seen anyone drive past a school bus that was unloading or loading kids in my entire life because I don't think anyone is that dumb.

Still though after thinking about it I guess the good outweighs the bad since he didn't hit any kids.

*Edit:* Is it even legal to write yourself a ticket? Isn't that kind of the same thing as getting yourself out of a ticket, except for the whole moral/ethical thing?

He did a noble thing. We'd be bitching had he nailed a kid getting off that school bus. The guy deserves some praise.

...

So.. he drove past the bus knowing that if you do it that it's against the law, then wrote himself up a ticket for it?

I see people drive past school buses with their red lights on, and stop signs out, all the time.  Nothing new.  Bottom line; people don't think, or they don't care enough to start thinking, or they can't think.

Most people get indignant, if you point out their error.  Or, the get so defensive they start screaming like a righteous lunatic about how there should be a sign.

I do take pleasure in pointing out the stop sign with the flashing red lights.

Yeah, big flashing stop sign, but have kids ever heard of crosswalks? They built them for a reason, they're what seperate us from deer who sprint across the road in hopes of not getting run over like Rudolph.

You obviously don't live in NYC. Driving here is like playing bumper cars. No one really pays attention to the signs most of the time, most do it out of muscle memory, which means they'll run stop signs instead of actually stopping. And red lights and flashing lights mean nothing. Today, I rode the bus to work, and the traffic light turned red 5 seconds earlier, and there was NYPD trying to run the red light making a left turn, and after the cop turned, the bus drove on. It made me laugh, everyone else in the bus thought I was crazy. NYC cab drivers, forget about it, those guys don't give a shit what happens. No signal for switching lanes, no signal for turns, complete disregard for the safety of all including pedestrians and the passengers themselves inside the vehicle. When I was in Middle School, school bus driver actually called in a car that passed our flashing red lights, but nothing ever came of it. Goes to show, no one really cares.

It kind of reminds me of when I ticketed a Highway Patrolman for traveling 105 mph in a 55 mph zone. He also was talking on his cell phone and didn't have his emergency lights activated.

385.00$ for Wreckless Driving, traveling 105mph in a night speed limit of 55mph
300.00$ for traveling 50 mph over speed limit.

Funny thing is, I wasn't the first Officer from another agency to do this to him.

*edit* for spelling.

You notice nothing was said until it was found in some court documents.  He did the right thing...he spaced out, made a mistake, then realized it and punished himself the same as he would have punished anyone else making the same mistake.

If he was a "media whore" he would have reported it himself to the media, or had someone do it for him.

I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he just might be a good person.
