"Fifteen 17-year-old British soldiers were inadvertently sent to Iraq despite a UN convention to keep children away from armed conflict, it has emerged."

I can see maybe one or two mistakes...but 15?

Re-read it, it says "Fifteen 17-year olds".  As in there were 15 of them.  Besides, can't you enlist over here when your 17 and a half (with parents permission)

Its completely legal to go to war when 17 in the UK. End of. If someone wants to be in the army so be it. Its their choice, im not going to stop them.

They were only kept a maximum of 5 weeks anyway...

We read it just fine. You not supposed to go over to Iraq unless you're 18+.

Umm..I know it said fifteen 17yr olds.  In the US you can enlist before 18.  But I thought the rule was you could not go to boot camp before you were 18?  Or graduate before you were 18?

Same in Aus, you can leave at 16 and join any of the armed branches if you so feel inclined. There choice if they wish to serve, though sending them to a warzone is no problem, its whether or not htere in frontline armed conflict with the enemy.

.  I thought you were referring to the recruiters making an error and recruiting 15-year olds, as opposed to what you really meant.

Isnt it a bit hypocritical to allow 17 year old kids to go to war because its their choice, but they are not allowed to drink alcohol and/or smoke? I mean it would be weird: you would be old and mature enough to kill people but not enough for drinking and/or smoking?

Edit: This is post is not against you, but against the government which allow this.

Oh, please.  Your country allows people who aren't considered mature enough to drink into it's armed forces.

I can't tell whether they thought they could get away with it or it was a huge oversight.  I'm assuming there will be an investigation in to why it happened.

When I went through Marine Corps boot camp in 98 we had 2 or 3 guys that were 17, and they graduated when they were still 17. I know you still can because when I was an Instructor at the School of Infantry west coast, I had plenty of kids that were 17. But it is a Marine Corps order that you can not deploy to a combat zone until your 18yrs of age, I know this beacuse when I was acting Plt Sgt in 3/5 I had to make sure all my guys were 18 before we deployed to Iraq.

I know. And i dont agree with it. But our armed forces are not likely to be deployed , so our 17 year old kids wont kill people. Thats the only difference.

Hear hear! Old enough to die for your country, but not old enough to raise a glass to it! What a stupid fucking law.

Well if you are old enough to decide for yourself that you want to join the military, you're old enough to fight in that same military. Werther or not stupidity is involved in any way is not the point. Best way to get all those wannabe military figures to get their act straight is to send them right to the action, period.

Think again...

You can join the British Army at 16, But CANNOT see front line service till at least 18 years old.

You can't stop yourself can you?

Anyway, you defend the UN, so defend their rules then.

From what, pointing out hypocrisy?  Why would I try?

usmarine2007 wrote:

I don't support them.  I just fail to see how all the ill in the world can be attributed to them, as people such as yourself love to do.  Further, you don't tell me what to defend, and this has nothing to do with rules, but, rather, agreements.  The soldiers were accidently deployed anyway.  But then, knowing that would require reading your source, and that's a bit difficult, isn't it .
