When I google earthed my house there is a car in my driveway that I sold like 5 years ago.

All they need to do is censor some photos and maybe re-arrange their base. The photos are already out there, banning google earth would do nothing.

Easy enough to use it against them. Google Earth maps are always a few weeks out of date.
So our troops set up a row of tents. A few yards away, a machine gun nest. Gets Google to upload new pix showing weak looking tent area. Haji attacks. Machine guns are waiting with bullets dipped in swine excrement.
You can imagine the rest.

That is the smartest way to kill insurgents.

Fucking fantastic.
I'm sure someone would disagree, saying that baiting traps are against the rules of engagement.

Why do you refer to Iraqis as Haji?

Bubbalo does not think they should be called terrorists since they attacked a military base, if you would like to discuss that there is a thread for that.

Although I would say this is a cause for concern, I dont think the images are that up to date.

As I can look at my old firm's workshop now, even though it burned to the ground in 2002!

Hardly useful <------- The basic layout of a Base will not change over a few year.. and many of them dont change very much.. I have used google earth and I can see Kunsan AirBase in S. Korea.. which has remaind the same for about 20 years. They have added a nice new Gym and some small new shops but thats it..

In WW2 japanese were Japs, Germans were krouts. In Vietnam they were Charlie and gook.  In Somalia they were called skinnies.

Haji is the generic name assigned to Iraqi MAMs ( military aged males ) by the U.S. soldiers.

Do ANY OF YOU KNOW WHAT OPSEC is?... Operations security (OPSEC) is an analytic process used to deny an adversary information - generally unclassified - concerning friendly intentions and capabilities by identifying, controlling, and protecting indicators associated with planning processes or operations. OPSEC does not replace other security disciplines - it supplements them.

The Less information they have the better.. even if it is outdated....

Well, so far ATG has the best idea IMO. Although I don't see anything wrong with banning Google earth if they ever chose to. What purpose does it really serve anyway? Do you really need satellite imagery of earth? Go buy a map.

There is a very very simple solution to this, that has been around ever since aerial reconnisance.

Camo netting. Drape everything with it, disguise it as something else. The serbs did it to foil airstrikes, so why can't we?

Cept they're using mortars, the nests would just get hit instead. Maybe we should stop using tents, or relocate tents every month or something. Or request google not to update pictures of sepcific coordinates. I'm sure google would agree, esspecially with a reasonable tax break.

So its googles fault because the British Army didn't say hey, can you blank out x,y,z coords? When did google become responsible for intelligence filtering? It sucks that the Brits fell down on the job and wanna blame a corporation. Did Geraldo in the desert teach us nothing? Any smart commander would make sure his shite didnt show up before hand....unless they DID ask and nothing was done. But the article (raise your hand if you read it) said nothing to that effect.

Thats weird because i've tried to check out various sub commands i was at or know of and they are pretty fuzzy. I only know where i am roughly because some of the ones i was @ NSB Bangor & Groton are still kinda fresh in the memory.

you obviously dont do anything relating to construction. Banning Google earth would be a huge pain in the ass.

EX.

Before I had to go to the city, wait in line, fill out a bunch of forms and deal with unhappy city workers.

Now, I only deal with them to find out specs on what THEY want and with a minimal of work I can with Google earth prepare any number of documents WITHOUT countless hours spent waiting in line for maps or other crap that you could only get from the city. And the map from the city is tract numbers. Good luck with multiple layers of data that you may need as part of that variance. More time spent. The long and short of it is...Google earth has many uses, all of which you seem to be unacquainted with.  Maybe check it out and see what it can do for you.

i would link you to some of my work but the server is down for maint...

Who cares if they use it to bomb British troops. If the Brits were smart, they would use it to bomb back.
It wasn't meant to be a warfare program.

It's not Google's fault that the military doesn't have the intuition to assume that terrorists have satellite imagery.
