David Ervine is on the other side of the Irish political divide to me. He killed my fellow countrymen while member of the loyalist paramilitary group the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF). He went to prison for his acts and he emerged at the other side a changed man, a man who had remorsefully and meaningfully realised the errors of his ways, a man who sought to bridge the divide between the Irish and the British, a man whom I came to respect. You won't often hear me eulogising a British loyalist but I would just like to extend a genuine 'RIP' to David Ervine, leader of the Progressive Unionist Party in Northern Ireland, who died today following two heart attacks and a stroke.

You don't always have to agree with someone, just respect their opinion. We can all learn from that.

He was a man of vision that's for sure and spoke a hell of a lot of sense, Rather than the bitter bigoted sectarian attitude of the main loyalist party Representatives.  If there were more men of his ilk in Loyalism this country would be a hell of a lot further down the road politically.. RIP.

Isn't Ireland already a part of Iceland?

David Ervine was always the voice of reason and was mainly responsible for getting the UVF on cease fire. Still have all their guns and bombs, but still, they ain't using them.
Totally opposite political beliefs than me, but was probably my favorite politician here.
He will be missed. Tips the balance of sanity into the DUP red that little bit more too unfortunately.

Wow! as I live and breath, unbelievable, a senior former IRA official, comforting the wife of a former UVF man at his funeral, the change in this country is immense, truly stunning & makes me proud.  Goes to show what happens when people stop killing each other and start talking & respecting each other instead..

Would be like Osama going to George's funeral and comforting Laura..

yep, my eyes nearly popped out of my head and I was close to shedding a tear. Every member of the UVF was in attendance. Everyone of them would have given their eye teeth to kill Gerry Adams, but fair play to all, there was no abuse, no jibes. Adams walked  (flanked by 4 man mountains) in to that church through thousands and out, payed his respects to a guy would have killed him had he the chance just 10 years ago.

It gives me a renewed since of hope for this country. It demonstrated that dialog wins. The pen is truly mightier than the sword!!!!
