In a poll of 1,000 Americans nationwide, AP-AOL found that:

- 35 percent predict a cure for cancer will be found in 2007.
- 25 percent anticipate the second coming of Jesus Christ in 2007.
- 19 percent think scientists are likely to find evidence of extraterrestrial life in 2007.

To me, the Jesus thing is weird, but alongside the other two, Americans sound JUST PLAIN CRAZY.

What do you think this says about Americans? Does our religious faith and unbridled optimism divorce us completely from reality?

Personally I like Cenk Uygur's take on the matter:

Cenk Uygur in the HuffPo wrote:

You people are seriously disturbed. You think a magic man is going to appear out of the sky and grant you eternal bliss. If the man's name was anything other than Jesus, that belief would get you locked up as a psychotic. And the fact that you have given him this magic name and decided to call him your Lord doesn't make it any more sane.

Imagine for a second if instead of Jesus, some psycho was waiting for a magical creature named Fred to come save him this year and suck him up into the sky. Now, who doesn't think that man needs serious counseling and perhaps medical supervision? Now, you change Fred into Jesus, and you have 25% of the country.

Sometimes the world scares me. It is full of psychotics who go around pretending to be rational human beings. You think that's offensive, then prove me wrong. I dare you. Show me Jesus in 2007 and I'll do whatever you demand of me.

83% of statistics are made up on the spot.

Edit: It said it was from AOL news, are they saying they polled 1000 people online?

I personally think it's amazing that everyone is so optimistic after the not-so-bright year of 2006.

If 'God' sends a representative to earth in 2007 I'll eat my own faeces and then eat the faeces produced from eating my own faeces.

I agree, because I don't believe in the mathematically-proven concept of the margin of error.

I also never believe anything that isn't an absolute truth. Therefore everything that qualifies as "understanding" rather than "knowledge" should be discounted as hearsay. For example, those bright twinkly lights at night - don't tell me those are balls of gas thousands of light years away known as "stars" unless you've physically touched one. And statistical patterns based on random samples used to predict tendencies in the overall pool from which they were drawn? Sorry, I think every single person in America should be asked their opinion - just like I have to analyze every last molecule in my drinking glass before I can call it "water".

Polls are stupid. Especially ones that only use 1000 out of some 300,000,000 people.

American's say some crazy stuff!

But then again....it could have been a poll of 1000 children! (Didn't check the source -busy).

Most polls show what the creator wants them to show to be honest.

It's sad but true.

This makes me more skeptical than the other results.  If this many people actually think that the US will start drafting again than they must have pick 1000 of the most frightened, paranoid, and/or fanatical people you could find.
This is just like the British show (I think it was on the BBC) that asked 'random' Americans simple questions about politics and geography.  Of maybe 100 people they only showed the stupidest 10 they could find; people who don't know George Washington from George Bush.

Let's assume "anticipate" means they believe without a doubt it will happen.  Then yes, they are not thinking clearly.  Especially since the Bible, which details the teaching of Jesus, says no man knows the day or the hour He will return.  In a different way, I anticipate (took forward to) the coming of Jesus every day, but I'm not saying that it will occur this year.  Presuming to know what God wants to do by setting a timeframe is the definition of foolish.  I’d like to see the question in the poll to interpret the answer correctly.  And as others have said, you’re judging all Americans by a survey of only 1,000.  Feel free to dismiss Jesus if you wish, but a poll of such a small scope is not a solid basis for judging all of Christianity.

Answer to Cenk Uyger – The psychotic believes in a mystical creature, in contrast to Jesus, who, at the very least, has been proven to exist on earth.  Also, the psychotic only his current imagination fueled by his medication as confirmation of his belief.  In glaring contrast, Christians have numerous historical documents written by over 40 authors coming from different walks of life which all coincide and confirm Jesus will come back to earth someday.

Cure for cancer......LMFAO!

Never. Monies to be made in the treatment not the cure.

As for Jesus, meh. Believe it when I see it. You don't think he'll be disguised as WW3 do you?

As for ET evidence, take that NASA money and investin number 1. Then we have a chance of finding the cure to cancer.

Um...no. Jesus doesn't know when the second coming is. How the Hell do 25% of 1000 people polled know what the Son of God Himself doesn't?

The fact that this is an AOL poll shows that they're not asking the most intelligent people, and is an inaccurate representation of the American populace.  I'd be willing to bet that almost nobody in these forums thinks Jesus will make another coming this year or ever again.  I recommend to people who live outside the US that are looking at this thread as an indication of American (for lack of a better word) blindness towards reality should consider the source.  A dial-up company that refuses to allow people to cancel their subscriptions is an invalid source imho.
