they aren't deaf but most of them do have hearing loss and tinnitus. and i guess it gets worse as they get older. Most of the ww2 and many of the vietnam combat vets i've known had serious hearing problems.Hurricane2k9 wrote:

Why are there not a ton of frontline soldiers coming home deaf? I've fired a pistol without ear protection before and it left them ringing for a while, and while I wasn't deaf I had a hard time hearing things for quite a few minutes. Soldiers in a firefight are exposed to a lot more loud sounds, and it doesn't seem like they're wearing ear protection.
Anything but a .22 rifle is too much for me to tolerate without ear protection. Even .22 pistols are too loud for me. gives me a headache just thinking about it.
