just posting this because americans love ragging on about how europeans are all under CCTV and evil socialized governments. can't say any european country has this...

massive scoop from the guardian. leaked security powerpoints from the NSA. 2 articles. verizon:

The National Security Agency is currently collecting the telephone records of millions of US customers of Verizon, one of America's largest telecoms providers, under a top secret court order issued in April.

The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an "ongoing, daily basis" to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries.

The document shows for the first time that under the Obama administration the communication records of millions of US citizens are being collected indiscriminately and in bulk – regardless of whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing.

The secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (Fisa) granted the order to the FBI on April 25, giving the government unlimited authority to obtain the data for a specified three-month period ending on July 19.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2013/ju … ourt-order

internet/social-media:

The National Security Agency has obtained direct access to the systems of Google, Facebook, Apple and other US internet giants, according to a top secret document obtained by the Guardian.

The NSA access is part of a previously undisclosed program called PRISM, which allows officials to collect material including search history, the content of emails, file transfers and live chats, the document says.

The Guardian has verified the authenticity of the document, a 41-slide PowerPoint presentation – classified as top secret with no distribution to foreign allies – which was apparently used to train intelligence operatives on the capabilities of the program. The document claims "collection directly from the servers" of major US service providers.

Although the presentation claims the program is run with the assistance of the companies, all those who responded to a Guardian request for comment on Thursday denied knowledge of any such program.

so what do you have to say to this? being more monitored than the state-suckling, mindwashed socialists?

are you feeling that warm boot, pressing lovingly against your face, forever?

you can tell the people doing the slides have been in the intelligence game a long time. talking pre windows 95. prolly also why they have such little hesitation in just using the internet as a surveillance tool. totally not caring or up to cultural standards on how people regard their 'internet privacy' and such.

They have more apples rotting on the ground than being picked from a tree, much less being made into pies. These slides reaffirm that. I'm not worried.

no reason to be worried if you're not doing anything wrong in the land of the free

how do you guys continue regarding europe as socialized state-ran lands of grey uniforms and cctv... when you are openly monitored en masse by your government? when you have the highest incarceration rate of any western country? when your police shoot and kill more citizens than any police of any other western nation?

just wondering how all that high-falutin rhetoric is holding up in america.

looks like a dying empire to me.

So after criticizing me mentioning George Orwell you use the book in the title of your new thread.  And instead of it being a serious discussion, you turn it into an America bashing fest.  GG.  This information really isn't new.  The existence of that data storage facility in Utah has been known for a long time.  Of course this is just the hard evidence finally being leaked, but its not like we didn't already know this was going on.

and don't be mad about the OP brah. just presenting the facts. haters gon hate. nyte could start 2-3 d&st threads in the same fashion and you didn't cry then. is it because i'm dissing the confederate flag?

no, loads of you come out with that shit. jay is constantly making references about socialists and europeans letting their govt. over-step their mark or do things for them. he even calls me a "marxist" sometimes if i show any sort of social-democratic progressive principles, or care/concern for poor people. it is a standard line used by americans whenever a european has something negative or critical to say about your politics or culture. now what do you have to say? our governments aren't building giant data-centres to store everything we've ever done, ever. in fact, the european court of human rights has just voted for the strictest forms of net neutrality - so much so that individual-national ISP's may have to backtrack on the copyright-infringement sites they DNS blocked earlier this year. we're going the other way. what do you have to say now, spreaders of world freedom?

I couldn't be less worried about this.

But!  If anything this just reaffirms my stance that less government is better and if we didn't have the behemoth government structure we do today, we wouldn't have garbage like this.

In response to the eurofags though, I was seen on 0 CCTV cameras today.  Pretty sure that is 100% less than any of you.

i live in the countryside and today i visited 3 different villages and went for a 2 hour cycle. i met two members of my family and spoke to about 5 friends in public areas. i was on 0 cctv cameras. i'm confident the government didn't store any of the text messages i sent to friends, or phonecalls i made to family members, either. phew.

another tough day in socialist utopia.

i know where you're coming from though. i feel so invaded when a corner-shop records me when i'm there buying gum. it's fucking evil, man. closed-circuit cameras are creepy. those cameras at the mall? what are they there for? i'm suspicious. but yeah, i'm pretty cool with the government storing all of my facebook messages and looking through my photos.

So exactly is the point you are trying to stick to us americans?  I've done nothing wrong and have no fucking reason to care if someone listened to a boring as skype call I had with my wife or some of the stupid shit I talk to your people about on an internet forum.  It's no different than being filmed buying gum at the store.  If you aren't doing anything wrong, why the fuck do you care?  Have you seen my facebook wall?  It's full of pictures of my two infant sons.  Pretty sure the government is super interested in those.

Do a search you noob

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utah_Data_Center

The Utah Data Center, also known as the Intelligence Community Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative Data Center,[1] is a data storage facility for the United States Intelligence Community that is designed to be a primary storage resource capable of storing data on the scale of yottabytes (1 yottabyte = 1 trillion terabytes, or 1 quadrillion gigabytes).[2][3] Its purpose — as the name implies — is to support the Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (CNCI), though its precise mission is secret.[4] The National Security Agency, which will lead operations at the facility, is the executive agent for the Director of National Intelligence.[5] It is located at Camp Williams, near Bluffdale, Utah, between Utah Lake and Great Salt Lake.

The data center is alleged to be able to capture "all forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls, and Internet searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails—parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and other digital 'pocket litter'." According to the FISA Amendments Act of 2008, the federal government is legally prohibited from collecting, storing, analyzing, or disseminating the content of the communications of US persons, whether inside or outside of the United States, unless authorized by an individual warrant from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court

In August 2012 The New York Times published short documentaries by independent filmmakers entitled The Program,[12] planned for release in 2013, based on interviews with a whistleblower named William Binney, a designer of the NSA's Stellar Wind project. The program he worked on had been designed for foreign signals intelligence (SIGINT) collection but, after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, Binney alleged that controls which limited unintentional collection of data pertaining to United States persons were removed, prompting concerns by him and others that the actions were illegal and unconstitutional. Binney alleged that the Bluffdale facility was designed to store a broad range of domestic communications for the purposes of data mining without warrants.[13].
Ive known about this since at least a year ago and many stories have covered this issue.  Spencer Ackerman on wired.com comes to mind.  From March of 2012 http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/0 … atacenter/  You're not nearly as smart as you think you are.  You really think Americans are too dumb to know whats going on, don't you?  n00b

This is a great beat up - these sort of powers were voted when congress was passing things like the Patriot act.

It's just the latest media theme of big government since the IRS scandal (which is worth investigating). The Republicans won't argue this is government overreach. They instigated this.

Satellites yo! You can't hide man. Anyhoo, if the NSA is interested in what I wank to online using google search or about my ebay and steam purchase emails I get to my gmail, then by all means, go ahead. Seriously tho if that's true, it's just fucked up that some paranoid officials can monitor what I do as a private person.
