Well, like I've hinted, I am getting a new computer soon. However, I've been shafted up the arse by computer dealers before, (not litereally you sick fucks,) and so like I said a while ago on some thread, I'm now asking your help to make sure I get the right one, because after all, you're the ones I'll be complaining to about crappy computers as you well know.

Since I've been using old old old computers for all of my life, I don't know jack shit, (I know his cousin Big Mike 'Bull' Shit though,) So I'l be typing this stuff off a list.

Processor: Pentium 4 #641 3.2 GHz 2MB 64bit LGA775 800 MHz FSB
Memory: 2GB, (2 x 1GB BBRII 667MHz dual channel configuration.)
Graphics: GIGABYTE GeForce 6600 256MB graphics card *256MB DDR *PCIE X 16 graphics *128-bit Memory interface *8-Pixel Pipeline *400MHz RAMDAC *TV out *DVI out *TwinView *Silent Pipe

So yeah, I don't know what the fuck I just typed.

Those are the important things right? Anything else you need to know?

upgrade the card to a 6800. i had one and it ran it okay. a gtx 7800 is realy nice!!! 2 gigs .. good. i run with 4 gigs (megs) and have a radeon xt1900 .. best setup with a pentuim 4. at the moment i could rig. but whats your budget? i can give you a list of things you can get. just dont overkill like i did. lol . happy spending!

Agree on the suggestion to go for a 6800, and I'd also check what PSU is going to be supplied, its the kind of thing suppliers cut corners on if they can get away with it. A minimum of 400w made by someone like tagan.

i have a Pentium 4, 1GB of Ram and a Nvidia 6800 card and it ran on a 350w PSU. i got a 400w PSU yesterday because my friend got a new one and gave me his old one, so if you are going to get a 6800 from nvidia a 350w should work with it.

I ran an 6800 ultra SLI setup on a coolermaster true 350W PSU,the analouge wattage display that came with PSU never rose above 200w,mind u i only had 1 dvd drive and 1 HDD.Now i run just a single card again (in the same setup) and i never use more than a 100W.Either that wattage display is wrong or these power consumption claims are grossly exagerated??
Just make sure u buy a decent PSU...trust me as el-cheapo psu,s that come with cheap cases can be the root of some very odd problems sometimes.

You have not mentioned hards disks yet.
I would get a pair of Western Digital Raptors setup as RAID-0. 10,000 rpm drives and a 5 year warenty, nothing out there is even close to these guys.
Be sure to buy some new sata2 cables as the ones supplied with your system board are low quality.
If you want to store any files get a seperate drive [internal or external] for MP3's etc.

I run a P4 3.2 and have never been able you get over 60% CPU playing BF2 so you should be fine there.
2Gb of ram is great.
Like everyone else has said try to get a slightly better graphics card. I play with a 6800GT [around 9 months old now], at 1280x1024 with everything but AA on high I still get 50 FPS.

If you don't mind, it would really help to put any monetary limits you have. That stuff is pretty good value wise, but with more money, you could definitely do better than that.

Shucks guys, thanks for being so helpful.
My monitary limit is about $2500 NZD.
I will be definatly getting an upgrade on the graphics card based on what you've told me. I mean, it shouldn't cost too much extra.
PSU... PSU... hang on just trying to find that on my list here...

Damn, can't find it. I trust the guy who's supplying it to me really, so I don't think he'll be cutting corners. He's a local, so he won't want me coming back and pissing him off every day, which I'm inclined to do.

mmm... looks good but go for a better video card, and ask about a Pentium D the new Dual Core technologie .... it is like having 2 3.2 processor...(i got Pentium D but a 2.8) but for the rest it is not bad and dont forget a good hard disk... then good mouse, good screen (23'' DELL ???) then a joystick then bf2 then oblivion then wow then bf2142 :-D YAAYY

Yeah, actual games are going to be another expense I suppose... At the moment I have BF1942, Jedi Academy... that's actually it in terms of decent games. Luckily I didn't buy them, but borrowed them of mates. They don't seem to want them any more. They havnt worked on any computer I've had access to since my Mum had a funky laptop given to her from her work, (she had to give it back when she left.) That was two months of coolness...
I need a job. They don't like me 'cause I've got long hair...

My only advice, build your own, if you do not know how, learn. It's trial and error, however if you take your time, you will be fine. What I built that one for would have cost twice as much if he purchased it threw alienware or such.

Build your own is the best way to go - not just price wise, but you learn a lot of useful skills neccesary to maintaining your system. The last thing you want to be is stuck relying on others to fix your comp for rediculous prices. Work on it yourself - it is kind of like christmas and lots of fun. I love it everytime I get new stuff to add on and modify.

PS, does the asthma puffer come included with that purchase? lol

LOL, that's my daughters and does not come with the package deal

You are 100% right. When you build your own you become more knoledgable on how computers work, therfore you can troubleshoot a lot better.

I haven't a pile of components arrive like that in over 3 years. Last time that happened, I built a friend's comp.

I always just upgrade mine, so I never see fresh build's anymore. Always just peices of the puzzle being added.

Nice setup though. Building is DEFINATELY the way to go. I've never looked back after learning how to do it via "google" one day

The guy who I'm getting it from is building it from scratch. I seriously can't be bothered to learn how to do it myself at the moment, degrees and whatnot are tiresome, (I've got two essays due tomorrow, it's 9:08PM,) but yeah, I will be able to upgrade it which will be awesome.

I just bought a system that is very similar (should be here this week)

CPU ("processor"): Opteron 170 (~ x2 4400, but with better overclockability)

Motherboard ("Mobo") (the place where everything plugs in): DFI nf4 - ultra U

Ram: 2 GB OCZ ddr 500

Video: ATI x1900xt (roughly same performence as 2x 7900 gt)

Hard Disk (already had that): 10000 RPM Western digital Raptor

+ Case, Mouse, keyboard, power supply,...

should be roughly 1600 something nz$. It will rip tough anything you can imagine throwing at it (exept maybe oblivion at ultra quality (i would need a 2nd x1900xt crossfire master card) + another mobo to support it)

If you want to build somthing similar yourself i can walk you through (with pics). Its not really that difficult. Everything can only fit in one way so you cant really mess up badly

BTW: much better performance than what you have. Especially the vid card is a bit on the low side: the geforce 6000 series is a generation back (we now have the 7000 series (duh))

new type of cpu is coming out in july.. it will cost less and perform about 20% better than current ones

bunch of people here is just mediocre in my opinion.. apprently tyferra doesn't really know about computer components yet these noobs just yell like "oh dude get 93746xtxgt becuase i think it's good"

anyway we need to know what kind of motherboard you are getting too.. some cpu doesn't support some and some doesn't support the ram you posted above.. one that you said is ddr2 and most of the mobo out right now doesn't support it

long ass stroy.. but my point is, wait till july for new stuffs to come out..
even if you aren't gonna get the new ones, the current ones will be way cheaper by then

Its not that difficult building a new comp m8, build my first last year - something close to the pic`s posted.

1 evening for the mounting and 1 evening for the cabling and testing/installing software. Besides you learn heaps of stuff useful when you later need to upgrade.

But why the Pentium, all pro-gamers use AMD ;-)

but in june everything will be revision 1 with many bugs. so you would need to wait at least until dec. until everything is resolved. Thats a long time to wait. AM2 will at first not bring any differences. Conroe (core 2 duo) has not really been tested independently, so you cannot tell if intels claims are true (to remind you: have you ever seen the 10 GHz cpus that they promised)

agree, its simple. Right now AMD is the way to go. In the future it might be intel again with conroe, but who knows what AMD has up their sleeve

Yeah I don't want to spend that much money and then fuck it up though.

@ washow, I always consider that risk - that's why I never buy anything technological. It's why I don't have a DVD player, even though my video player dosn't work any more, (and has my Star Wars Episode Three video lodged in it, meanwhile the late fees at the video store are skyrocketing. I tried handing in the whole VCR but they didn't even want it!)

I expect, rather pessimisticly, that as soon as I get a nice new PC, there's going to be some new super thing that I won't be able to get. It happened with the Windows series, as soon as I upgraded to windows 95, windows 98 had come out, when I got a new computer after that it came with ME, and ME sucks! I even expect XP to be replaced as soon as I get it.
But right now, I don't care. I just want to have a decent computer for once. Sure it won't be the best, but I'll cope. Technology changes so fast that what's top-of-the-line one day is garbage the next. I'll settle for something that plays BF2 and BF2142 now.
