I think it looks fun. A change from BF2 but, still following the same basic control scheme, physics, and gameplay so it will seem familiar (assumption). I say that because it's my guess "2142" is using the same basic engine as BF2. With whatever necessary changes are needed for the new features, vehicles, ect.

Sharing the same engine as BF2 may explain the speedy release as well. I wouldn't doubt it the least if it's here by fall. I'm sure I'll buy it.

Yes, your correct, and I wasn't being clear. By polar ice, I didn't mean the icebergs melting, but the ice / snow on the land masses.
While I am in Canada, I don't consider the north pole to be land. It's water that is usually frozen.
I was speaking more about Greenland, Antartica, and the Northern glaciers.
I also noticed someone mentioned the diminishing salt content in the water. I'm glad to see that reading (outside of forums) isn't a lost art.

I'll stop now before I get booted to "Serious Discussions Only" forum.

BTW: for the "this is gonna suck" because Canada is making this, all I have to say to that is:
Careful, or will only ship you the French version!

"A buddy list is now part of the main menu interface, which has been rebuilt to aid players in online matchmaking. Also joining this game this century year will be a new game mode, "new Commander features," and "the ability to play co-op with your friends against an AI team." Check out the pages of PC Gamer yourself for further details, or wait till E3 when much more will be revealed."

Anyhow the article had CENTURY written for release date, kinda funny

How you guys are *not* seeing the similarity to BF1942 vs BFV I have no idea. Why nobody has commented on that, I also have no clue. If you have questions as to how its likely to get implemented, look at BFV.
just because i'm pedantic:

Unless they make drastic gameplay improvements for BF3, I don't think it can be called a sequel, and will end up being what BFV was to BF1942.

yeah "The BFV of Bf2" is a great way to put how this game will most likely turn out. kinda like the "eh" game spawned off of a popular title

It's a quick game put out to keep people who have had enough with BF2 interested in the BF series and remain EA/DICE customers long enough so they buy BF3. Very much BF:V re-visited.

one thing DICE cannot do well is design their own warfighting equipment. the video proves this. those vehicles and combat gear are some of the most uninspired concept i have ever seen. no thought went into their designs. just look at the sad looking mechs and vehicles. and what the heck is the battle drone doing there? i dont want to control a battle drone. controlling a make believe human that controls a make believe robot in a game is just silly.

the design of the models in the game is right up there with the soldiers of F.E.A.R. who wear mattress padding for protection. BF2142 is a bad idea in my opinion. not just from the lack of creativity but also from the fact that players want a game that they can relate to in the real world. EA simply has to read the user feedback in these forums to see that gamers who bought BF want to be as close to reality as possible... not fantasy.

makes me want to play mech warrior 2 now.

Not on my buy list, because I still am trying to rank up in BF2. I will await the BF3 anouncement in summer '07, since I will have a job and chance to spend more money on a new graphics card. I hope this game doesn't take all of the good BF2 players away.

Also, I would rather see a game called, Battlefield: UN Intervention, where you can play in battles that the US, UN, and NATO were in from like '89 to 2000, like Gulf War, maybe even internal strifes, like Darfur, now that would be a cool game.

And put the damn story mode back in S-player, I loved that in BF '42

I dont liket it..

1. its to soon for a whole new bf release... (but we all know money angry corporations always wins)
2. i bet its gonna be buggy as hell.. using the bf2 engine to handle so many robot blink while it cant handle right an apc.
3. the concept sems to me WRONG, its just not the battlefield market.. most 30 something guys dont like teen robo future blink.. its just like an halo thing
4. why not make a vietnam, 1st world ward, 2nd world war, korean war, or just more an better maps for bf2.. most of the pople just play karkand.

anyway im just guessing maybe its going to be a good game.. but i dont like it

also.. when would sfi developers understand that in the future soldiers wont look like a 80 sfi movie "TRON".. its just sad and funny at the same time.. this concept isnt even good for sfi fans.

Don't worry about it. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars will smash BF2142 like a bug.

like a bug!!! *waves fist*

i hope you're right. i have to say that quake 4 was one of the biggest disappointments in fps recently, so (ironically) my hopes for QW is now even higher. seriously though, what they've said so far sounds great - objective based gameplay ftw

back on topic - mechs.are.cool. completely ridiculous from a design point of view - but imagine how much fun it's going to be to stomp on enemy troops? squishy squishy? c'mon, you know you want it! I just hope that one of the refinements is the addition of blood - ragdolls are all well and good, but when c4 just makes a guy fly in the air 100ft, well, it's kinda lame.

hmmmm...in 2142 there are two military super powers: the European Union and the Pan Asain Collition. What happened to America? Cause the story said that the land left over that was not frozen was around the equator. Europe is way above the equator, so why did they survive and the Americans didn't?

why was it a disappointment? i hear it from some people and i want to know your opinions. I thought it was a pretty good game, the tank and mech sequence was kind of boring but still fun at some points. And as usual ID makes the bosses easy sometimes, hinting like doom 3's cyberdemon. The mp is still fun but yea its like q3.

Quake Wars: i want it badly!!! looks great and is like the first quake game not about fast past killing.

yea imagine stomping on soldiers : )

This will be a sad departure for the bf series, just like bfv this game will tank.

Hopefully the bf after this sad 2142 will be the gem bf2 has been , bf2 will be my shooter till something much better comes out but that can be few & far between.

I imaging I'll play bf2 less with all the new good games coming out i.e. morrowwind oblivion , supreme commander too name a few.

I stand by my assertion that BF 2142 is not the "next" BF2, but rather the"NEXT TO" BF2. With ET:QW coming out soon, they are simply doing what any savvy company would do, competing with the competition by delivering a similar product to compete for the same market segment. Just think of BF 2142 as a branch of BF2 same as BFV was a branch of BF1942. Good move by EA. Do I think it stands a chance against ET:QW? Hell no. But this is what competing companies do. Compete (or at least attempt to...).

If you dont like 2142, trust me, you will have another year or so of BF2 until BF3 comes out using a similar time period on a brand new engine. If you like ET:QW.....well......BF2 will be just a fond memory.

I did a lookup on the DNS yesterday and they have purchased battlefield2.com through battlefield9.com, granted this may have just been playing it safe but do you honestly think they would throw such a successful franchise as BF2 completely by the wayside on the mere "hopes" that a futuristic game like 2142 could replace it?

No freakin' way man! We're gonna have two completely different battlefields to choose from: The near future and the distant future. What could POSSIBLY be wrong with that!!?

The current BF2 world we all know and love will be here for a LONG time. As I've said before....I'll bet the farm on that! Will I be playing BF2 or ET:QW or BF3?

Damn if I know, but I sure do love the fact that I'll have the choices.....

Man, EA/Dice just keep pissing me off.
This is just a blatant rip-off of ET: Quake Wars.
I can imagine EA/Dice sitting there doing nothing when all of a sudden someone bursts in:
"Holy shit, there's like this totally awesome online game coming out that has vehicles and stuff like BF, only IT'S IN THE FUTURE!
EA: *gasp*
EA: okay we need one of those
Dice: We'll get on it right away
Someone: What about BF2 though?
EA: FUCK THAT WE NEED LASERS
Dice: ..okay

I hate the concept of future games. It would be hard to create and i think that there are already enough futuristic games such as unreal tournament. This frustrates me.

yeah, who needs weapons if you can simply dolphin dive on infantry soldiers with a huge armoured robot. and bunny hopping mechs is gonna be hilarious. they should make infantry soldiers fall to the ground when they land.

A few of the above posts suggest maps based on previous wars, for eg WW1, WW2 and Vietnam. Why not bring it upto date and have a Baghdad or Kabul based maps. I mean not to offend anyone who knows someone who is actually fighting in the war, simply to perhaps give us a slight insight.

Im not suggesting it to glorify a war or anything. Proceeds of the game sold could go to families who have lost loved ones during the recent war.

I appricate that some of the maps are Middle East based both city and open map however, Baghdad has some distinctions which if it wasn't for the tv I wouldnt know about.

I think I'm fortunate that the UK never appears in any of these "war" based games it means my country hasn't had the troubles that others have and when it did I wasn't around to experience it. Maybe MOH had some british levels on but in general it's usually German and French land your fighting on.

Im 30, and as mentioned above a Sci-fi shooter dosen't intrest me. (the post mentions 30 somethings) I won't be buying it but it will probably grow to be succesfull. As long as EA/DICE dont forget about BF2 I'm happy.

Exactly. This is about brand recognition. EA would rather compete against itself, with multiple games in the same genre, then against competitors. If they can accomplish this with the one brand (BF) then great! 5 years ago, Lucas Arts was competing against itself for the FPS market, the MM online, and the RTS markets. EA's Sims and Sims 2 were in direct competition. ID software was also known for doing this with it's early FPS releases.
BF2142 will be the same idea. If the C&C battle between Tiberian Sun, and Red Alert taught Westwood Studios (now EA as well) is that it's good to have a backup on the market that is still running strong. Red Alert's following ensured a sequel, and not Tiberian Sun (which was supposed to be C&C 2).

If the 2142 game blows, they will have the backup to keep the strength of the brand strong.
