What do you guys think about alienware.
Good computers or are they not worth it

Not worth it at all. They are WAY overpriced. You can build your own computer for less, and it would probably be better.

I'm sure having a great time with mine. Yeah, alittle overpriced, but with the rebate I only paid about 1800 for it.  Nice box.  Great performance.  Good support with a bunch of ESL techs on the other side of the globe, helping me when I get a case of the "Stupids".

EDIT: After research, Trigg is right in that you could pay alot less.  I guess I had the money and was too lazy to do the research, but I'm still a happy guy.

I personally wont recommend alienware because you can always save money when you build it yourself. If you dont know how, just ask, im sure people on this forum can give you a tutorial

if you have won the lottery i think you should buy one.  its like bragging rights, to have a well built well developed custom system.  Alienware is known among gamers with fan and aint fans alike.   Now, i would rather build one for the money, as i am a computer tech. But would like to own an alienware if i won the lotter.   or they gave me a 99% off coupon

Since I am lazy I bought one, I used to build my own. But if you ever do build your own system you will forever be hooked and want to tinker/tweak your computer. I am thinking of gutting out my Alienware and slap it all in a the new Silverstone Media PC case One thing to keep in mind if you do build, don't go cheap you will end up having un-needed headaches.

Hell If I won the Lottery I would go with a Falcon anyday over an Alieware. Now if I was looking for a Laptop to game on I would buy one.

I own a Alienware Area 51 extreme laptop.... to keep it short, it kicks ass. I will say if you want a desktop for gaming build your own... you'll save thousands. I would recommend a shuttle barebones system, especially if you plan on moving you desktop around a lot (Lan Partys),  also if you just want a sweet looking mini desktop. The reason I went with Alienware was for a laptop, I was not up to the challenge of building a gaming laptop. I currently play bf2 on it at 1024 x 768 with absolutely no problems... monitor is 17" and it run by a standard desktop Radeon ATI video card... The sucker gets freak'n HOT but does not effect performance...... Also, Alienware has the best customer support in the world. Always a person to talk to 24/7, and a awesome website for driver updates and downloads.. And the customer support person is physically located in US .....(no offense to non US residents, but I am tired of USA outsourcing It support.) So if you do buy an Alienware computer definitely buy the extended warranty, As their high end computers are built for high performance, but when you push computers to the extreme it sometimes comes at a price. If you don't want to build a computer and you want the fastest one around go Alienware - the price aside you wont be disappointed.

I bought my Alienware Area-51 desktop almost 2 years ago. It cost me $3,500. I had to put in $2,000 worth of repairs in it. It sucked for me to have an Alienware. The problem was that I didnt have a big enough power supply that they gave me. It was 480 watts, but I need at least 650 watts plus, which I have in right now. But it blows out every 3 to 6 months. When I had the 480 in it blew out within minutes of playing a game, like Doom 3. A 550 watt blew out in 5. I blew out a processor, about 20 power supplies and 2 motherboards. A really had bad luck. It will work great when I put in a new power supply, one that is over 700 watts. By the way I also had an overclocked graphics card in it which I replaced. But now I see on there web site that they are offering 850 watt power. So I guess they finally learned there lesson. I really must have gotten to them.  So I would recommend Alienware now, but Falcon is good too.
I sent in the PC twice to them and they said nothing was wrong. I got it back and put in a game and 3 minutes later,  BOOM!!! I must have called them almost every week for 2 months so that we could figure out what the problem was. They could not figure it out , but I finally did.

You get warranties on your individual parts. Also, insurance can be obtained through your rental/home-owners insurance policy.

As for Alienware, I know folks who have had them and I can't say they are worth the extra money. Supposedly, they use high quality parts, but I've seen them break more than my custom built system. You are covered by their warranty, but you have to ship the whole system back to get anything major replaced. If you have a part go out on a custom built job, you just take out the broken part to RMA it.

I really really wish i had the time, confidence and skill to build my own computer.
Im also arguing with my parents because i have a computer but it needs repair and i dont want to pay for it because its an agp platform and i know it will be outdated in a matter of months. Even with the newest agp card out (7800gsoc) and im thinking on the long term it would be better to get a pcie x16 system to support future games and just return that video card cause i just got it like 2 days ago.
(plus the computer i have now can not be upgraded at all, really outdated, not enough slots, and such)

So, my parents are too stressed to help me order all the individual parts for a custom computer so it would be ten times easier to just pay it all in one and get a computer that will last a while.

Im planning on getting an Aurora 5500 for about 1500-2000 bucks.  Got all the sli n stuff so it can be upgraded whenever the high end games become a little out of reach. Ill get just one vid card in it now cause im short on money.

If i wait a little longer i might get Falcon-nw's Fragbox. A lot more expensive but its cool and transportable...kinda

I also looked at voodoo's stuff, most expensive computers ive ever seen. I made a computer on there for
25 thousand dollars.

Plus i really like Alienware's good warrenties and tech support.  They also have a program they give you that sets your computer back to the day you got it with all the original shiz just encase you get a fatal virus or feel like starting over without sending it back to the company.

alienware sux... the warrenties are good though...  and i heard sumwhere that if u even open the case it voids warrenty. and the program thingy that sets the copmuter date thing is called nortons go-back, comes with all 2005 norton system works or later now. but building ur own pc is a lot better, just read the instructions, its not that hard and it only takes about 20 min

Its not norton you get with it its an alienware program
called alien respawn:

AlienRespawn serves as a simple, proactive solution should this worst-case scenario become a reality. Alienware understands that the investment in a computer system for the home or business is not to be taken lightly. With AlienRespawn, you are empowered to completely restore your system to its original factory settings without having to send it back to the factory. Alienware is the only PC manufacturer to offer this option to its customers.

AlienRespawn is based upon the custom image of each PC taken by Alienware during your system's integration process. This information is recorded onto two discs, a Boot CD and an Image DVD. Detailed, automated instructions on these disks will guide you through an easy step-by-step procedure should system recovery ever become necessary

I erm .... don't have an alienware .....!

Yeah, i've got one and i love it...! i run upstairs happily every time i can go on it!

Im 16 so i'm really happy ive got one. I admit that now i should have bought a build , like from www.aria.co.uk
but i'm still really happy with it. Ive got a great base system, all i need now is an improved graphics card and another gig of RAM.

The customer service is amazing, even if it does sound like they're talking through a letter box!

And to be honest.... if you can find a sexier looking pc i will eat my own face!
( i have a black with green cooling Aurora desktop)

.......thats my view!

Black with green? eww
im getting black with blue lighting.
Did you get the acoustic dampening? Is it worth it to reduce the system noise?
(if you get the acoustic dampening the led lights on the sides of the case aren't leds. there ultra quite shizz.

Nah green looks alot nicer...especially under my dark desk.

When i got mine acoustic dampening wasnt an option but i bet it will be worth it if you want it quiet. Its no louder than a normal pc without it from my experience.

Hope this helps

I"ve got black with red.  But I regret the choice during the day, it looks almost pink.  However, at night, it's F'in sweet.  Most of my day is spent on this forum, (and I work alittle inbetween posts ) so the nocturnal look of my Alienware floats my boat.
