i agree the media latches on to whatever situation/story/human interest issue is out there. But it's not treated like it never happened - names like Jonestown, Columbine, Ft Hood, VA Tech, Charles Whitman still resonate with most people these days, even if the media treats those events like a short time hooker

Yeah, I agree. Would likely take a 10-30 yard, low light, face shot, with tear-gas and innocent bystanders running interference. It's not a good set-up. I'm not saying it's impossible. (An AF security police airman made an 80+ yard headshot against an active shooter in 1994, with a 9mm pistol.) The theater situation is a tactical nightmare. For the majority of shooters, in the majority of seats, taking the shot would be extremely risky to bystanders with a low probability of success.
There are few "good" solutions to this one.
As such, most pro or anti concealed carry arguments are pretty much moot, IMO.

Except he was walking up and down the aisles randoms targeting a person here and a person there according to reports. Walking past people left and right and then randomly shooting another. CCW or not I ma shocked by this... The tear gas and general shocking nature of the attack had to be disorienting, but I really can't believe no one tackled the guy. If someone was armed they would have been able to practically walk right up behind the guy and pop him. I can't say what I would have done, and there are so many variables (like if I had my family with me, for example) it is impossible to predict... But damn.
