I think if you conduct business and/or own assets in a country you should be taxed proportionally.

Or feel free not to do so and enjoy living in your tax-free haven.

The middle ground, where people are rich enough to manipulate governments in multiple countries but pay no tax in them, eg Murdoch, Halliburton etc, is unacceptable.
I'm pretty sure any money earned on the stock market is tax regardless of citizenship status.

Leaving =/= renouncing citizenship.  He came here, became a citizen, and is now renouncing it a week before facebook goes public (as hitman said he's been living in Singapore for a while now).  He shouldn't be allowed back in this country.  All the people are saying "ohhh you guys are a bunch of Stalinists", well, no, this guy is a two faced immigrant fuck who's already got more money than he can spend, ever.  And made it here, utilizing our public resources.  Now he wants to avoid paying so other immigrants can have the same opportunity.  FUCK.  HIM.

I said nothing about people who escape, for example, to avoid getting blown up in Vietnam.  I don't believe in physically capturing people to keep them from leaving to go to France for a vacation.  I never even said anything close to that.  Typical Brit.

He's not going to be able to step foot into the US if he renounces under current law.

I read something along those lines as well but apparently the burden is on the gov't to prove that he renounced for the purposes of avoiding taxes.  The new law would apparently reverse that.  I don't see how they can come to a different conclusion.

Well he did publicly come out and say his renunciation was for taxation purposes and most of facebook's business is in the USA not Singapore so... And he's not exactly renouncing to become a citizen of another country.

The Reichsfluchtsteuer ("emigration tax") was introduced to Germany in 1931 and turned into an anti-Semitic special levy in 1933. As of April 1938 the tax became a major instrument of expropriation in Austria as well. Jews, who left the German Reich, had to pay 25 per cent taxes on their assets which they had registered in 1938. Persons who were forced into concentration camps outside the Reich's borders also had to pay Reichsfluchtsteuer.

Chuck Schumer is just about the worst piece of shit in the US government. He does anything and everything to garner headlines and advance the power of government via nanny state issues.

You say this guy Severen owes us, the United States. Why? Because he lived here and happened to breathe the same air you do? He owes you money out of his pocket because of that? The guy renounced his citizenship. I'm sure that taxes played somewhat into that, but wouldn't you avoid taxes if given the chance? I would. Most people would. This country was founded by tax avoiders and it's more of our national pastime than baseball is. Regardless, I doubt seriously that tax avoidance was his main reason for choosing to dump his American citizenship. For some reason people take it as a personal insult if anyone chooses to give up their citizenship here. We're indoctrinated from birth to believe that this is the best place on earth and that everyone wants to come here. Because of this, no one can possibly believe that he left for any other reasons than saving a bit of money. Whatever.

You guys really need to change your tax laws in regarding taxing overseas Americans. Shit is pretty fucking stupid. But yeah he is renouncing because of tax purposes as he's still a Brazilian citizen with no intention of acquiring Singaporean citizenship.

You don't pay income tax from overseas earnings unless its over 100k per annum. I'm pretty sure Mr. Eduardo makes more than that.
Yeah, that still doesn't change anything I said. It is a common practice for a number of people, and is accepted, but in this case they just see dollar signs and think that makes it ok...

Just because he makes MORE money he should pay income tax to multiple countries?

According to a study done in 2008, the 400 wealthiest people in the United States paid almost 20% income tax.

So let's apply that here, and call it the average for each country involved... That would mean he would lose 60% of his pay due to having 3 citizenship/resident countries...

But just because it is more that 100K, that makes it ok?

I often wonder how people can reach adulthood and still make sweeping idiotic statements like that. Surely the 2+ decades you've spent living have taught you out of a sample size of 10 you're going to get a lot of different people with different views and opinions, never mind an island nation of some 67+ million. I guess that's what makes scrolling post the inane shit on youtube so easy, you know they're all mostly 12-16 year olds being internet badasses. I guess you just haven't done enough living or met enough people in your life to evolve from your current form as an intellectually bankrupt ignoramus. One day spearhead, one day...
