Christie said earlier this week that he planned to sign an executive order for flags in his state to be flown at half-staff on the day of Houston’s funeral — now scheduled for Saturday — to honor the late singer. The Republican governor hailed Houston – who was born in Newark, N.J., — “a source of great pride” for the people of his state, saying she “belongs in the same category” as Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen and Count Basie.

His decision drew criticism from those who said the symbolic honor should be reserved for soldiers, first-responders and elected officials, as well as other who felt uneasy about speculation that her death may have been linked to substance abuse.

The New Jersey governor defended his move Wednesday, saying, “I am disturbed by people who believe that because her ultimate demise — and we don’t know what is the cause of her death yet — but because of her history of substance abuse that somehow she’s forfeited the good things that she did in her life.”

I don't think the flag should be flown at half staff for any entertainer dying, no matter how they died... Unless, you know, it was saving a bus full of orphan children from a terrorist organization while simultaneously phoning the CDC and telling them the formula for the cure for cancer...

Let's get a federal holiday for her birthday set up... I need some more free time off work.


In all due seriousness though, I would expect her birthplace to hold more pride in her, and mourn her death stronger than the rest of the nation... I just can't imagine Oklahoma flying the flags at half mast when an Oklahoman entertainer dies... Except, obviously, Chuck Norris.

Unless they died in a plane crash... We love honoring our plane crash victims to a degree that I don't know if that is normal or not...
