I wouldn't pick an RTS, as the learning curve for nearly every single one of them is simply too big if you want inexperienced players to have a chance.

That would be exactly the point. We are only picking RTS games that we both know equally or those that we have never even tried.

If it wasn't 1v1 I would have no problem with CoD4. But in 1v1 it becomes a rock-paper-scissors game with perks/accessories.
CoD 1 is a lot more suited for 1v1. Better gunplay and the only option you have is a choice of 4 guns. A 1v1 has to come down to skill, not to a lucky choice.

balance is the best it's ever been actually. i wouldn't worry about it for casual play at all. and you could make the same learning curve argument for any decent rts out there
